Early look: Renault Laguna GT

02/22/2008, 12:43 PM

By Drew Johnson

The 78th Geneva Motor Show is just around the corner, and Renault has released images of two vehicles that will be gracing its stage at next month’s show: GT versions of its all-new Laguna Hatch and Sport Tourer.

As the GT moniker implies, it will serve as a high-performance version of the Laguna. Under hood, bot GT models will be available with the same range of engines. Buyers can choose from a 2.0L turbo-four — producing 205 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of toruqe — of a new 2.0 dCi diesel unit making 180 horsepower and 295 lb-ft or torque.

The Laguna GT will also feature an all-wheel steering system, which Renault dubs Active Drive.

Exterior upgrades to the GT will include lateral air-intakes and larger front grille, new 18-inch alloy wheels, smoked rear light clusters and black background to the headlamps.

The GT’s interior will include leather and Alcantara sports seats, drilled aluminum pedals, an aluminum gearknob and a GT steering wheel.

From the angle that they’ve shown. The sedan looks exactly like an Altima clone with a different nose

Very Nice. I like the sporty nature of this car. But once again. America will not get it.

for a gt model i think it needed at least the choice of a v6.

Flipper: Isn’t that *exactly* what this is? A badge-engineered Altima? At least they don’t sell the Altima in Europe…

Drop an Altima nose on the wagon and sell it here, please.

A nice looking car and I like it with the diesel powerplant.

Personally, I think they’re pretty cheasy looking… The Nissan Altima is a much better looking car.

Weird hatch reminds me of the hunchback of Notre Dame! Not liking the rear, the front is ok.

I like this car, attractive in that quirky Renault way.

Lads, it is Altima! Renault owns 44% of Nissan and Gnosn run both. I second RicardoHead on the wagon and sunshine1810 on diesel. However, I doubt that either one will happen.

I like the nose on this. Actually the whole package is nicely done. Now stoke the engine bay with our Altima’s V6 and manual trans and the package would be complete. Autonut’s right though: we’ll never see this badged as an Altima. Too bad. This would certainly make for a very distinctive trio. In fact, when was the last time anything short of the 3 Series offered a true sedan/ coupe/wagon combo?

The interior is lovely but the exterior is kinda goofy. that front end does the car no favours. I like the way renaults drive though….sorta comfort based.

Like it, and I just failed to see that Altima you’re talking about guys, if it’s 2008 Altima! Renault and Nissan borrowed something from their style and tech side to each other after the partnership started in 1999, when Nissan was almost done.

It’s ain’t partnership whenn one owns 44% of another. Renault bought big chunk of Nissan. Ergo it is Renault version of world car. Just like Nissan Versa is Renault Megane in Europe and god knows what somewhere else. Selling one car all over the world in a good business, as GM is slowly learning.
