Despite turmoil in the auto industry, the Renault- Nissan Alliance is pushing forward with plans to open a factory near Tangiers, Morocco, that would produce low-cost cars for Africa and Eastern Europe. Construction on the factory, which will open in time to produce cars in late 2010, is already underway, the automakers say.
Renault-Nissan hasn’t announced just what vehicles will eventually emerge from the assembly plant, though it’s expected that a low-cost Dacia product could take priority.

The facility is a major undertaking for the automakers – a total investment of about $865 million is involved, partially split with the Moroccan government.

The downturn in the auto industry will likely delay the eventual production of vehicles at the plant, a Renault spokesperson told Reuters earlier today in Paris, but the automaker declined to specify just how much of a delay is possible.
