Renault planning to cut 4,000 jobs

09/10/2008, 9:39 AM

By Andrew Ganz

French automaker Renault said yesterday that it plans to cut 4,000 jobs due to lower-than-expected sales volumes primarily in the struggling Western Europe market. Though Eastern Europe has been strong for Renault and its subsidiary Dacia, overall sales in Western Europe have seen a drop similar to North American sales.

The cuts incited protests from unions, who appealed to French president Nicolas Sarkozy for help. The automaker has high hopes for its upcoming Megane, which will be officially introduced next month at the Paris Motor Show.
