Nissan will reportedly debut an all-new version of its Versa small car at the fast-approaching New York Auto Show. The new Versa – which will be designated as a 2012 model – is expected to be largely based on the Chinese-market Sunny.

The current Versa is based on Renault- Nissan’s global B platform, but the next-generation of the car will make the switch to Nissan’s V platform. Smaller than the B platform, the V platform currently underpins the Nissan March/Micra as well as the Sunny.

No word on powertrain changes, but Nissan could replace the Versa’s optional four-speed automatic with its latest Xtronic CVT, which would likely give the small car a boost in economy. The thriftiest version of the Versa is rated at 28/34mpg, but look for those figures to increase to keep up with the competition.

Following its New York debut, the 2012 Versa is expected to arrive at Nissan dealerships during the second half of 2011. Like the current car, the new Versa will be built at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico plant.
