I think Apple should have worked with Audi instead. Audi already has a more user friendly/ergonomic theme going... apple would fit into that perfectly

Kenny, Safari is free, you have to chose to download it and Apple like other company's warns you it's not perfect. I do not think a peice of software that is released as a beta version that has bugs that are fixed (and quickly at that) can be called a product flop.

As for the iPhone, um you did not do your research too well as the phone can get email on Exchange Servers, as for price every smart phone is expensive so that point is....well not one. A 2 year contract it is a little excessive but still not a deal breaker for a lot of people. I have Cingular (AT&T now) and have had Sprint and Verizon and can say Cingular has by far been the best of the three...it could be my area but it still has been the best of the three. As for MMS I am not a girl in high school sending text messages to my friends and besides, I seriously doubt Cingular would have signed on to sell a phone that does not allow texting. As I pointed out it may be a flop but until it is released you just plain do not know....Apparently NASDAQ does not think you are right either.

Let's hope the design team doesn't put too much eye candy in it. Exposé and ripple effects are fine on computers, but quite distracting in a car, I'd imagine.

drivinisfun - Maybach may have been a failure but it only lost a few million seeing as it wasn't really a high cost project unlike Chrysler who was a complete waste of money and time. Time have already started to get better and thats the way it will probably stay for a long time. Chrysler more then likely on their way down especially with that truck oriented line-up

I don't think Benz would put a little trendy peice of bs equipment into their cars for the sake of it being fun to look at. It's not that hard to make a navigation system considering that they still have 2 more years to work on it before its debut. Yes it will probably be overpriced with a bunch of features that you really don't need and It is probably going to have a hard drive to store like 10000 songs but i don't think it will be a failure the main thing that people rate NAV systems on is effectiveness, ease of use, egronomics, and visual appeal/screen clarity.

johnstew,
Yes the safari is beta, but that's what every company is calling their products these days. In the first 5 hours of its release a number of security holes had been found. Apple had to update Safari the day after it came out to patch it. Safari offers nothing that FireFox, Opera, or even IE doesn't already.

As for the iPhone. It's only available through 1 provider, it's expensive, there is no actual keyboard, no 3G, crappy 3rd party application support, no MMS ability, no ability to connect to Exchange mail servers, and did I mention you have to use Cingular. The iPhone isn't a true smartphone and therefore has no use in the business world. The only people that are going to buy it are the technophiles or image conscious that have to have the latest and greatest. It's cost with a 2 year agreement is a whopping $500 and thats just for the 4 gig version. My name isn't Mrs. Clio, so I could be wrong. However I'm willing to put money on it that the iPhone will be about as well received as the Zune.

Who cares? This is barely news and I'm going to just wait 2 weeks before coming back to lln until some real news piles up. Also, maybe Daimler should spend some time fixing things like, oh I don't know, the failure that is Maybach.

Kenny, what makes you think the iPhone will be a dud? Every company produces something the market just doesn't like but it has to hit the market before you know (and unless Doc Brown has been giving you rides in the DeLorean I doubt you do). I doubt I need to remind you that Safari on Windows is a Beta version so I don't think I would go so far as to call it a dud just yet either (it can't be worse than Internet Explorer). If you want to talk about duds at least from the standpoint of money made try the Newton.

Kenny, what makes you think the iPhone will be a dud? Every company produces something the market just doesn’t like but it has to hit the market before you know (and unless Doc Brown has been giving you rides in the DeLorean I doubt you do). I doubt I need to remind you that Safari on Windows is a Beta version so I don’t think I would go so far as to call it a dud just yet either (it can’t be worse than Internet Explorer). If you want to talk about duds at least from the standpoint of money made try the Newton.

So was this about the new navigation or was it about the iPhone? Considering some of the duds that Apple has produced (Mac Mini, Apple TV, first gen iPod, Safari on windows, and soon to be iPhone) the only thing I would be willing to put money on is that it's easier to use than BMW's iDrive. Apple has no history of car navigation and like almost all companies first gen products I just can't get excited when I can't find any details about the product.

I'm with you, GBilbo070, seems like a slow news day.

Although, the dawn of the iPhone age should make us all cringe. Though, first, you have to hand it to Apple. The iPod has been an unprecedented success, and undoubtedly, its popularity has transformed the auto industry and the proliferation of auxiliary inputs for car stereos. Before iPod, I think everyone was just happy playing their mix tapes and mix CDs.

But if you integrate e-mail and internet into a car-based system, let the motorists beware. I see the appeal of being completely connected to the outside world when you're on the road. I commute to work 19 miles in suburban crawl and I drive for my job. I spend almost 2 MONTHS in the car not doing anything but driving (well, an occasional cell phone call I must confess, but with Bluetooth wireless technology). The thought of multitasking during this dead time I'm sure has widespread appeal.

Maybe the new system, if it has e-mail and internet, will only be able to let you access it when the car is parked. But if not, then we'll have drivers distracted by e-mail, internet browing, and cell phone chatter on the roads at the same time, all the time, and I for one think most motorists will be seriously regretting THIS step in the advancement of technology, with increased traffic accidents and higher insurance premiums.
