Report: Audi plans CLS-like “A5 Sportback”

If subtracting two doors from the Audi A4 makes an A5, what does adding two doors back give you? Still an A5, apparently. According to a new report out of Germany, Audi is planning to launch a four-door A5 to join the growing segment of so-called four-door coupes.

Inspired by the success of the the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, it seems every automaker wants to get in on the four-door coupe party. Audi’s parent company recently launched the Passat CC, and BMW is working on its low-slung Gran Turismo. Other automakers are also rumored to be mulling such cars.

According to Germany’s Autobild the car will be called the A5 Sportback. Long gone are the days of simple model line from Audi, or any German automaker for that matter.

The car is expected to launch in early 2009, the report claims. Audi is also widely expected to launch its CLS-like A7 “Sportback” in 2010, but this is the first we’ve heard of an A5 of similar description.

Below are a few illustrations of how the car might look.

bijomaru - are you kidding me? How can Audi be trying ’something new’ when Benz, BMW, VW, and many others have followed the whole four door coupe thing as well. That is as original as a Special Edition Mustang (how many of those do we have now?)

SR - deep breaths. It isn’t a sedan, but it isn’t truly a coupe. However, it has a sloping roofline like a coupe and since it has 4 doors, it is a 4 door coupe (add 4 door + coupe)

Next on the newspeak agenda is to make a hatchback that looks like a saloon and call it a “Trunkback” so that hatchback haters will feel good about themselves when they buy it.

It’ll be popular around Notre Dame.

@RicardoHead

According to my source the next hot thing for 2009 will be an SUV-coupe-convertible with 7 doors and a 1000bhp hybrid engine.

I’m still amazed at how an A4 with two less doors became an A5 and when they added the two doors back it wasn’t called the A4, that’s one neat magic trick!

Would make sense to call it A5. It is a 5 door hatchback. Quite logical: A3 in US trim has 3 doors (they call it hatch but it is really a wagon). This thing is a real 5 door hatch.

I love Audi but they’re stretching it a bit too much with releasing so many new models.
