Report: Audi pulls A1, next-gen A8 from Frankfurt show

07/09/2009, 11:35 AM

By Drew Johnson

This September’s Frankfurt Motor Show will be light by at least two new model reveals as Audi has reportedly pulled its A1 mini car and next-generation A8 flagship sedan from the German show. Audi will instead use the Frankfurt show to display its new A5 Sportback.

According to Automobilwoche, Audi has officially pulled the A1 and new A8 from the Frankfurt Motor Show. No official reason has been given for the double no-show, but Audi will try to fill the void with the public debut of its all-new A5 Sportback. However, the Frankfurt show won’t be the A5 Sportback’s world debut as it is slated to be unveiled later this month at an Audi event in Germany.

The A1’s show cancellation does put some doubt on Audi’s small car program – as there is still no concrete launch date for the MINI competitor – but the next A8 is said to still be on track for a late 2010 launch. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler has hinted at a November reveal for the new A8, so expect to see Audi’s next-generation flagship sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

I can’t wait to see how the A8 will look like! I can’t imagine anything less than amazing when comparing the new audi’s to the new bmw’s and mercedes’ lineup. They are the one’s who actually haven;t been disappointing in there designs…so far at least!

Ya, audi, BMW, and Mercedes do such a great job competing with eachother, the A8 is going to look like
nothing we can imagine.

I’d still take the current A8/S8 over the 7 or the S, nevermind the next generation.

I’ve never cared for the Audi brand because of the snobbery associated with it; however, Audi does embody automotive excellence and I believe if anything is worth doing in life then Do it with Excellence in mind and this would say with that kind of effort then Audi is an overachiever. I wish Ford Motor which is Starting to show True Greatness will continue out with Great models like the new Taurus SHO will show case future examples like this in the Lincoln Brand which should be a World Luxury vehicle I’d say the new LincolnMKS is a step in the right direction.

Heck, I’d still take an early 2000’s A8.

Actually, the A5 Sportback will be a more interesting reveal as something out of the ordinary.
I’m sure the new A8 will be the same conservative, boring, stretched version of an A4 that it always has been. It’s the wallflower of the luxo-barge market..

if audi messes up that A5 sportback, then it is going to be very difficult for them in the market, seeing as that is the most attention gathering sedan. If, however, it is amazing, as most audi’s are, then the brand will really take off on american shores.
BTW, i’d take any audi

Theres a CPO’ed RS4 with 6,000 miles on it for $49k too, leftwing, if only it were that easy, if only.

Just so the new A8 gets more torque. The 325 lb-ft isn’t bad but it’s pretty light when you conisder the competition. That’s about the only thing to improve on. It’s otherwise excellent.

LS460- 367 lb-ft
S550- 391 lb-ft
750i- 450 lb-ft
XJ8 (2010 5.0L)- 380 lb-ft
A8- 325 lb-ft

In a big saloon, torque is important.

Actually Leftwing, that’s a good deal! I still owe about 20k on the GTI though…

Other Man,
you are going strictly based off of numbers on paper, go drive those cars and your statement will differ drastically!

Smart move by Audi. They see the writing on the wall for the A8 now that the Hyundai Equus is coming on the market, and there is no way the A1 is ever gonna compete with the Yaris or Spectra.

I’m not going to pretend to know any of the specs about the cars you mentioned, and I’m honestly too lazy to go look them up. But I have to agree with idrinorbarsaku, just the torque numbers mean nothing when not in context.

For example! I have a 30-40ish horsepower vehicle that can and DOES outrun 200-300 horsepower vehicles on a daily basis.

Whats the catch? I’m on a 300 pound motorcycle. They’re in 3000-4000 pound cars/trucks.

nobody thinking about an $80,000 german luxury machine will ever go to HYUNDAI. i think the equus did so well with the people already in the HYUNDAI showrooms is because it is so much nicer than the rest of their fleet. It just impressed the CHEAP americans.

Reedfast, how could the Equus have impressed the CHEAP americans in the HYUNDAI showrooms if it isn’t even available there yet?

Hey guys I know there’s much more to torque than numbers. The 4.2 FSI starts in down low, but nevertheless it’s still missing almost 50+ lb-ft that the competition has. The A8 is easily beaten by the vehicles I mentioned, which points to that fact ,even thought it weighs less than most.

Adequate? Easily, but luxury is not at all about adequacy.

The A8 has good torque if you get the 6.0 W12. 428 lb-ft isn’t that bad at all.

What they forget to mention is that these vehicles will be pulled on the back of a flatbed or tow truck just like their POS stablemates do on a constant, daily basis.

Be American. Buy American. buy GM
