The R8 moved the Audi nameplate a few rungs up on the performance car ladder, but an even bigger shift forward could be in store for the German automaker. Audi is reportedly readying a supercar to slot above its flagship R8 model.
According to AutoExpress, Audi is developing a new supercar to sit atop its sports car hierarchy. Extending its relationship with corporate sister Lamborghini , the new Audi model – rumored to be tagged the R10 – will likely ride on a version of the next Murciélago’s platform.
Whereas the Audi R8 ’s overall look is of a mundane supercar, the R10 will boast a more aggressive style, complete with wide wheel arches and a hunkered down look. That more curvaceous body will be made of aluminum and carbon fiber, ensuring weight is kept in check.
Power for the R10 will likely come from a turbocharged 5.0L V10 generating about 600 horsepower. Power will be sent to all four wheels, allowing for a 0-60 time in the 3 second range.
Prototypes of the R10 have reportedly been spotted around Germany, but a production run is still a ways off. The Lexus LFA rival isn’t expected to surface until 2012 at the earliest.
