Report: Audi readying R10 supercar

11/23/2009, 1:15 PM

By Drew Johnson

The R8 moved the Audi nameplate a few rungs up on the performance car ladder, but an even bigger shift forward could be in store for the German automaker. Audi is reportedly readying a supercar to slot above its flagship R8 model.

According to AutoExpress, Audi is developing a new supercar to sit atop its sports car hierarchy. Extending its relationship with corporate sister Lamborghini, the new Audi model – rumored to be tagged the R10 – will likely ride on a version of the next Murciélago’s platform.

Whereas the Audi R8’s overall look is of a mundane supercar, the R10 will boast a more aggressive style, complete with wide wheel arches and a hunkered down look. That more curvaceous body will be made of aluminum and carbon fiber, ensuring weight is kept in check.

Power for the R10 will likely come from a turbocharged 5.0L V10 generating about 600 horsepower. Power will be sent to all four wheels, allowing for a 0-60 time in the 3 second range.

Prototypes of the R10 have reportedly been spotted around Germany, but a production run is still a ways off. The Lexus LFA rival isn’t expected to surface until 2012 at the earliest.

Maybe they should design this one to work with the V12 TDI… please?

So not only are you going to go against Porsche like you half did on the R8 – Now they are going after Lambo. I guess if you compete with someone, it might as well be against yourself?… GM had alot of luck with that in the past…

your right A4, whats the point in having an R10 if it doesn’t have a TDI

@ JakeK66 , who says they are going after Lambo ? i have a feeling the 2012 Gallardo will have more than 600 hp and the Murcielago replacement will be even more powerful.

a V12 TDI on the R10 sounds fun and all , but i think its weight will affect the handling in a bad way and a diesel supercar will not sell in the US.

The R8 already looks better then the lexus zip tie LFA. Audi makes cars to be driven, not to be looked and only driven on a track.

this is going to be a beautiful car. i doubt they would (hope they don’t) make a car like this without planning a TDI version

^^ hey vw fanboy, didn’t you read what lln said – “Audi R8’s overall look is of a mundane supercar”. oh who am i kidding, your idea of beautiful design begins with a pontiac aztek. moron.

scratchy, rich people aren’t always as stupid as the common Prius-bonered average schmo. If Lexus can sell/lease 500 cars that look like a glorified Celica for $375,000 I think Audi can move some TDI supercars. Actual enthusiasts know the advantages of diesel, or simply like the idea of a diesel supercar, I guarantee it would sell enough units in the US.

Making a supercar with a V12 TDI seems like a no-brainer to me if Audi wants to capitalize on the success of the R10 LeMans racecar. Also I think by having a turbo diesel it would help substantially differentiate itself from any Lambo models. Go for it Audi!

R10 sounds like Audi’s attempt to build the ultimate schmuck-mobile.

Maybe it’s just me, but “mundane” would probably be the LAST adjective I would ever use to describe the A8. I find it to be beautiful, and exactly what the second-generation Acura NSX should have become.

Audi will sell it and not lease it; also unlike Lexus, Audi will sell more than 500 of them. Good job Lexus!

I wonder if VW AG will be stepping on it’s own products with R10. They have Porsche, Lambo and Audi all going for the super car class now. All of them pretty much in the AWD 2 seater segment with the brands being the only difference. Maybe they are intentionally over saturating the market to take out competition?

11/24, 6:51 AM

@ Soravia , Porsche has no AWD 2 seater. the only things conflicting now is the R8 V10 and the 911 turbo, but i think they are different enough to attract different types of buyers. the 911 has it’s loyal followers and the R8 provides a safe, usable AWD supercar for the non 911 fans. Lamborghini is out of Porsche’s and Audi’s price and power range, same with Bugatti.

scratchy, yes they do. The 911 Carrera 4 is the AWD version.

i don’t think they should really car about an in-company competition. Sure, maybe you will hurt porsche or lambo sales, but if you’re selling the audi for more, it doesn’t really matter.
