Report: BMW planning X4 crossover coupe

01/11/2007, 11:01 AM

By admin

It’s no secret BMW is developing a “coupe” version of its X5 off-roader, called the X6. Company officials have confirmed its development, and spy photographers have spotted prototypes in testing.

But the X6 isn’t the only crossover-coupe under development at BMW, if Germany’s Auto Bild is to be believed. According to the latest issue of the magazine, BMW is also working on a coupe version of the X3, called the X4. While the larger X6 has four doors, the X4 has just two.

It’s not known if the X4 is currently under development — or if the project has even been approved — but it’s clear BMW is serious about this emerging “Sport Activity Vehicle” segment. [See full X4 illustration].

They’re expanding the brand way too far. Almost as bad as Mercedes. Audi seems to be doing the same thing.

I suggest they keep their focus on a smaller family of vehicles, and keep their quality up.

GMnumberone…how do you have time to post on every single topic, saying the same things about stupid GM products? Are you sitting on the computer while your classmates are outside at recess?

I have the time because my job gives me access to a computer termainal all day long thank you very much. I travel a lot and get stuck on planes all the time. What better than to spend these flights reading forums about cars, which I love to talk about.

BOT, question for you 6ix. BMW has one of the worst reliability and quality records in both JD power and Communist Reports. Who has the best? Cadillac and Buick. Pontiac, Chevrolet, Saturn and GMC all reign close to the top as well. It shows in the ratings and it shows on the streets. How do I know BMW’s are reliable? Check out my story about the 2 different stranded owners over in London. There’s an eye opener for you.

Example, just this morning, when I was parking my car in the garage, I pulled in next to a guy unloading luggage from his Audi. He looked over at me with a sad look on his face so I asked him what was up? He told me that his brand new Audi A4 barely made it to the garage because the engine was smoking so badly and the transmission was shifting like crazy, bucking and rockin into his parking spot. So he was getting it towed which is why he was unloading the trunk. He asked me about my G6 and if I liked it and said how it was so much nicer than his Audi.

Told me his wife also has a POS Lexus RX that coughs up transmissions on a regular basis and he is looking to dump it. I guess he and his wife really like the Chevrolet Equinox and Saturn Vue because they are better quality and the most reliable of their segments.

i like bmw`s alot, but lately they seem to be on the gm path with vehicles nobody really wants. i liked them more when bmw meant you had an exclusive luxury vehicle.
now they are mass producing all kinds of vehicles, i hope they dont shoot themselves in the foot as they are doing so good rite now.

Hell yeah, a 2 door rally BMW. Something you could slide around gravel roads. Leave the Z4-M for the tarmac, and this new X4 for the backwoods. I think it’s cool, and unlike anything else on the market. Stick that twin turbo straight six in it, and a manual gear box. I mean, it’s no Chevy Aveo GM#14ever, but it’s a sweet ride none the less.

Communist reports? Computer terminal? The article is about BMW’s yet you start trashing Audi’s and Lexus?
Are you sure that you’re on the right forums?

I agree CTS Driver.
It seems nowadays that BMW’s are just road appliances rather than the driving machines that they used to be.
It seems to me that BMW’s are for car magazine fanboys and not true enthusiasts anymore.

GMnumberone, that was really amazing. BECAUSE OF YOU i’m gonna trade my 06 A4 for a G6…and my wife is going to do the same with her RX…btw, if your car was “smoking so badly and the transmission was shifting like crazy, bucking and rockin into his parking spot” and you’re about to be towed…why would you even had the work to park when you could just wait where it was “broken”…and you don’t have to tell how much unreliable an audi is over a pontiac. Everyone knows the pontiac is better…

jazz i think it is standard issue for some bigoted users to trash anything that isn’t GM/FORD/DCX for no reason.

Why are BMW bastardising their image for? 2009 will have the new x9, z2 ,m8, zmx2i, 335.6i 521.76d if BMW continue this trend.

The proliferation of models (not just from BMW) is reminiscent of the .com era. Solutions to problems that don’t actually exist. That being said, it also illustrates the advantages of platform sharing. Numerous niche and semi-niche vehicles built off of common platforms, with the economies to allow it.

Hey GMnumerone4ever, why do you spend so much of your time bashing others? have you run out of people to sell Mr goodwrench shirts to at the trailer park? Thanks to close-minded people like you I will never buy a GM product again, the service and warranty on ALL GM products suck.

No manufacture makes a perfect car every time. You hear horror stories about any manu. I could spew a story for every make and model. So dont give me that crap. Im a car whore i say that because i buy 2 new cars on average once every 5 -8 months. Ive owned many wonderful pieces of automotive engineering. Some ppl spend money on what ever their hobby may be. Mine is spending money on new cars. I love them. Honestly im a lover of German autos. Ive made that determination through experience. Something im sure not many of you have. Ive had American cause i once was pro American, then i moved on to Japanese, and finally German. Reliability aside, the Germans make by far the best handling every day cars in the world. Im sorry but you cannot beat them for pure every day driving performance…PERIOD. Reliability wise i have never had ANY issues w/ my Benz, audi, or BMW, I had some issues w/ my G35, M35, and a host of issues w/ my American models FYI.

TRY JD POWERS THE TOP 5 ARE FROM ASIA AND AMERICA, BUT BMW IS DEFINATELY IN THE TOP 10 FOR SURE, MERCEDES IS WAAAAAY DOWN WITH CHEVROLET. I HAVE 1 JAP CAR AND 1 AMERICAN CAR, AND MY GIRL HAS THE GERMAN CAR. HER 525 IS WONDERFUL, SO IS THE CADDY, THE BEEMER HAS A WAY NICER INTERIOR, WOOD TRIM AND SLIGHTLY NICER LEATHER SEATS, WE DRIVE THE CADDY ALOT MORE FOR LONG TRIPS, AND USE THE BEEMER FOR LOCAL EXCURSIONS (TRIPS TO CLUBS,RESTAURANTS, ANYTHING THAT NEEDS VALET PARKING). THE BEEMER AND CADDY RUN BASICALLY NECK IN NECK IN THE TWISTIES. I JUST THINK AMERICAN CARS ARE BEING JUDGED FOR THE GARBAGE THEY PUT OUT IN THE 80`S AND 90`S, AND NOBODY WANT TO EVEN GIVE A LITTLE CREDIT FOR CARS SUCH AS THE NEW CADILLACS BEING LIGHT YEARS BETTER THAN BEFORE. BUT OH WELL, AT LEAST BMW KNOWS GM IS A GOOD PARTNER FOR HYBRID TECHNOLOGY, THE CONSUMER DONT KNOW BUT BMW DOES.

since merc started started making weird cars like R class and CLS, the other german companies all have to come up with a weird car of their own. weird. i mean whats the point of a two door coupe 4×4 suv. whats the point of having a coupe that will handle like an SUV. well i think there is still more point to having a coupe that will handle like an SUV than GMrules tryna post telling us GM products are the best.

I miss BMW. The real BMW, the one that built cars for enthusiasts. The one that used to have manual transmissions in every single class they sold (3,5,6 and 7). The BMW that used to angle the dashboard towards the driver because the driver was the #1 priority. The BMW that built those bulletproof I6 engines that ran forever with regular maintenance.

I do not like the “new” BMW. The BMW that throws more pointless electronic gadgets than any car should have. The BMW that decided that NAV, i-drive, Bluetooth, voice activation, speed sensitive steering, SMG, imploding M3 engines, ugly designs that have to be defended over and over by Herr Bangle and marketing studies are far more important than good engineering.
