As gas prices continue to rise, luxury automakers have been forced to take the risk of offering smaller, four-cylinder engines which have traditionally been frowned upon as unsuitable for luxury vehicles.
It appears Cadillac is the latest to bow from the pressure, according to sources speaking with Car and Driver, who says that The General’s luxury brand will be adding four-cylinder engines in “a number of models” in the future.
According to the report, Cadillac will test the waters by offering four-cylinder engines in both the upcoming XTS full-size sedan, and the smaller ATS sport sedan. A previous report by Leftlane showed a leaked spec sheet for the 2014 ATS that listed a 270 horsepower, 250 lb-ft of torque turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine, along with an eight-speed transmission. Expect that engine to be spread across several models.
Should the market respond well to the more fuel-friendly engine choices, Cadillac may expand their use to the SRX crossover and the next-gen CTS.
Expect more details on the Ecotec four-cylinder engines in the coming months.
