Aside from the Fiat 500, which is set to go on sale in the United States as a 2011 model, the first Italian-badged vehicle of the Fiat-Chrysler tie-up will likely be a full-sized Alfa Romeo potentially built on the Chrysler LX platform in the Michigan automaker’s Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant.
Canada’s Financial Post cited a report from IHS Global Insight that the new, large Alfa Romeo would be built alongside the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger at the Brampton, Ontario, assembly plant.
The 300, Charger and Challenger’s LX platform, a byproduct of Chrysler’s tie-up with Daimler, could provide just the full-size platform that Fiat has been seeking for its Alfa Romeo brand. The Italian automaker’s last large sedan, the 166 (pictured), was not a financial success in Europe and its successor has been pushed back repeatedly. The front-wheel-drive 166 was discontinued in 2007. Originally slated to receive the 169 nameplate, rumors a few months ago suggest that Fiat might invoke either the historical Milano or Giulia badges for the model in North America.
Sized about like an Audi A6 or BMW 5-Series, the 166 was actually sold for a brief period in the United States by AutoDelta USA, a private importer from Tennesse, though the shady dealings attracted the attention of the EPA, which later shut down the operation after just 24 cars were imported.
Considered a main element to Alfa Romeo’s success in North America, the 169 would be tailored specifically for the market and would not likely be built in Europe. It’s expected that Alfa Romeo would sell the 169, the smaller 159, the Spider roadster and probably the Brera sports car in North America.

I imagine the motivation will come from new engine family developed by Chrysler. BTW, FIAT (Alfa) has an excellent V6 motor in its own inventory. Not to mention they have a slew of diesel engines with tremendous output for a diesel ( and enough torque to twist slush box in US trim).

So let’s just clear this up – as if there wasn’t enough brands in the stable, they need to add two more just to keep it interesting? Come on, HOW MANY TIMES do we have to go over this? FIVE brands is just too much for one company and dealership. especially one that doesn’t have much of a market as of right now anyway. The focus isn’t there, Chrysler Dodge Jeep is actually a nice mix of brands for premium/value/utility but adding Fiat and Alfa just is going to extend it too far.

I’m with A4. I want the 159. Last year, Alfa (Fiat) was reporting that they wanted to get back into the US market before all of this fallout. At the time, they even said that they intended to make the new 159 (circa 2012) to meet all US regulations (current 159s do not). I’m hoping they still follow through. If they want to let Chrysler designers use the same platform to adapt a Chrysler, fine.
But an Alfa 300. Yuck.

Next plat from FIAT – Split up the Brand into there own dealerships – make the Chrysler dealer and Fiats sold together but to get people off their backs for the Fix It Again Tony acronym they’ll call it a vintage all-American name- let’s say Plymouth making Chrysler-Plymouth delaerships.
Next they’ll leave Dodge by themselves – they’re a volume brand anyway, they can hold their own dealers by themselves.
Finally – in a move to become more diverse, they’ll take Jeeps and Alfa’s and put them in a dealer together. To force us to believe Alfa isn’t the same company it once was in terms of qualtiy, they too change their name to an all American icon, the Eagle, making Jeep-Eagle dealerships…

It’s a new car by FIAT that better reflects what Americans ACTUALLY drive not what pundits, punks, and pussy willows think everyone should be driving. Get over yourselves. Just be happy that FIAT and ALFA are bringing other cars into the mix.
CHRYSLER is going to be using FIAT’s engineering designs to base smaller cars but the majority of people in the US buy and drive larger cars. Trucks and SUVS are in decline but that does not automatically mean we are all going to driving in little pod cars.
I swear some of you think so much like the morons at GM who keep jumping from one end of the size spectrum to the other just because Gas spikes for a few weeks. I think we will see either an end to the HEMI or a major evolution, but big cars are not going away anytime soon if ever. Just the propulsion will change.
I think this article is badly off. The LX is going out for the LY platform which underpins the Challenger. I just wish CHRYSLER would retune the Challenger. It may be heavy as a Clydesdale , but it can still at least try to be a lighter on it feet. Tuner Challengers are outrageously capable, so why can’t DODGE be bothered to get it at least half right?
At any rate, I want to see this ALFA ROMEO built on the LY platform before I pass judgment.

Fiat needs the Chrysler platform for the C and D segments where it barely competes on the global scene even with Alfa and Lancia. Frankly it does not need to put its A and B segment platform into Chrysler. The volumes and the margins simply are not there in North America but could, as long as the US$ is undervalued, make sense for export market.
I would guess that the next Alfa Romeo Crossover will be based on a Jeep or even a Dodge platform.
Living in Europe and having owned Alfas I simply need to warn North American Folks to take off their pink tinted nostalgia glasses. Current Alfa Product line does NOT compete with BMW, MB or even Audi. The interior is not very exciting, the quality ….debatable, performance of petrol engines mated to FWD or overweight Q4 …to be taken with a grain of salt. Only the most rabid Alfisti will put up with some of the brand’s most obvious shortcomings.

I think you guys might have this all backwards. This car is likely going to be produced here and shipped over to Europe for sale. The Brampton plant currently builds all the 300’s and Magnum’s for worldwide distribution including Europe. It makes sense for Alfa as they’ve been looking for a platform like this, and it utilizes a plant that is already exporting to that country.

This is a good idea but Alfa has to re-create their V6 engine (their current JTS is really a highly modified GM High Feature engine). This car should be named the Milano because the Giulia name should be named for a small sub 3-series sedan. But it should be a lot smaller than the 300 and Charger. I’m still glad that Alfa is bringing it’s other models here in the near future.

But don’t worry. It’s only approx. 400 ibs heavier (but also RWD), larger, more flexible and probably better engineered than the current 166 platform.
Alfa is the Pontiac of Europe, just more beauty and less driving to impress.

Ford, GM, Chrysler, Honda, etc. all have tons of diesel technology at their disposal in European countries and how much of it have we seen in the car market? SomeGreek- Reason why I say that is because both Pontiac and Alfa were performance marks. Sorry, but Alfa’s just don’t perform anymore. Pontiac for the most part don’t. Atleast your guys Alfa’s are better looking. Both don’t have the quality, Alfa probably worse than Pontiac.
