Report: Citroen GT headed for production

07/01/2009, 3:54 PM

By Drew Johnson

The Citroen GT started out life as a concept purely for the digital world, but the French-built supercar is reportedly headed for production. The Citroen GT made its world debut at the 2008 Paris Motor Show in conjunction with Gran Turismo video game franchise.

According to Autocar, Citroen boss Vincent Besson gave the GT the production nod just last week. As expected, the GT will see an extremely limited production run, with only six examples expected to be produced. Fitting of a limited edition supercar, the GT will carry a price tag of about $1.8 million.

Citroen is also said to be keen on keeping the production version very close to its show car counterpart. That means the majority of the concept’s features will make it onto the road-going version, including the concept’s carbon fiber construction and copper interior trim.

The GT concept was theoretically powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, but the actual car will be powered by an American-sourced V8. Citroen is considering powerplants from General Motors and Ford, but whatever bent-eight the French automaker chooses, it will be making at least 500 horsepower.

Citroen is expected to make an announcement about the forthcoming GT at this September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Make it a Ford Motor Built FORD MOTOR because it will not only last much longer but Ford will be around to service it unlike the latter company!

They actually said an “American” motor? Good for them, that’s something we should be proud of, them wanting something of ours for a change. The GM’s LS7 or Ford’s 5.4L would be mighty fine under the hood of this French supercar.

Am I the only one who’s not surprised that Citroen would ditch their experimental hydrogen fuel cell engine? I thought it might have been impossible to create 500 HP off an fuel cell that could possibly have some practical problems in real life.

The LS7 would work!

I think the 6.4 Hemi can do the job when it comes, the crate engine comes with 540HP, which tops the R8 V10. But the LS7 and the Ford GT500 engine are fine choices aswell. I just prefer the Hemi as I’m a mopar guy, another option is Supercharging the 6.1 Hemi, and it will also be like the old Monteverdi 450 SS with the 426 Hemi.

Let’s rename it the Citroen Pantera 2 GT.

Of course, it’ll need the upcoming Ford 5.0, possibly in EcoBoost trim. 8)

i don’t like this car but i think a screaming engine like the 7.3l AMG V12 in the Zonda would fit better with the personality of this car. but maybe Citroen wants to be different than the other exotics with V12s.

Zonda’s engine has proven to be perfect, but they already said American. Now, 1.8M for an American?

Thats cool. I wonder how much of it will change? There must have been a few meetings about the design saying…. ‘oh its just a concept, dont worry about it” moments! haha – now its back to bite them in the backside!

Walter Payton your the greatest rusher of all time I salute you sir!. And you have excellent taste in the finest automobile engines in the world built by none other than Ford Motor Company. I think we can serve up an All Aluminum Coyote Direct Injection, twin screw mill that produces comfortably more than twice what their asking for!

Won’t be much of a supercar, anything pulls along side and it will surrender.

Previous comment is so true. lol. – Surely a major company like Citroen could come up with an engine of their own – twin turbo V6 or something would be far more appropriate in my opnion, or, if their only making 6 of them source something from the likes of Judd engine developments
