I hate the alphabet soup names of cars in general. I wish they would come up with a cool sounding name, but I suppose that's not "European" or "upscale" enough for the sheep out there.

Anyway, I don't think they need a wagon version, but sedan, coupe, convertible, and V-series versions of all three are definitely needed, to compete with the M3, RS4, and C63. I'm looking forward to this car, and I wonder what engines/powertrain it will have. My guess is base engine will be the 3.0L direct injection V-6, followed by an optional 3.6L direct injection V-6, and the V-version may get the new 5.5L V-8 being used in the GT2 Corvette ALMS racecar right now, perhaps with direct injection as well. And hopefully it will have an optional 7-speed DSG gearbox, along with a traditional manual too.

@ American: Obama doesn't drive a Cadillac, he used to drive a 300C SRT8 until he sold it for a Ford Escape Hybrid, his Limo is actually a modified GMC TopKick.

I think ATS is a rather stupid name, BTS is better. If the XTS gets renamed as the DTS then that can leave room for a 1-Series/B-Class/A3 sized ATS based on the Delta and an ETS Coupe/Roadster at the top.

Hahaha..I don't even need to go to a comedy club to get a weeks worth of laughs in a few minutes.

I'm interested in how the styling will turn out; I love their new direction.

85ZingoGTR, while I wouldn't defend the Cimmaron or the decision to produce it, I don't think Cadillac's image was as severely beaten by it as you suggest. It certainly didn't help and obviously caused many to chuckle or even laugh. But during those years serious Cadillac buyers were shopping for El Dorados, Sevilles and Fleetwoods. While at that time even those models were in their final years of supremacy, in my opinion, it was mroeso the 1985 Sedan DeVille that marked the start of the company's serious decline than the Cimmaron. The Sedan DeVille was to supplant their premier, bread and butter, market. But it missed the mark. Completely. They sold like gangbusters simply because, up until then, people bought what Cadillac and Lincoln sold to them thinking it was best. Unlike the Cimmaron, which was primarily Cadillac's failed niche-response to a need for efficient vehicles, the newly shrunken Sedan DeVille struck at the base of their image. Then the ill-conceived micro-sized El Dorado and Seville replacements came out for 86 and nearly completed the un-Cadillac-ing of Cadillac. They didn't seem to understand WHY they needed to reduce the size if their cars, they just did it, rather than putting forth an honest "standard of the world" effort. The cars felt big but were small and suffering in quality. That's the legacy I see as having seriously hurt Cadillac's image. But that was a quarter of a century ago and I believe they began repairing their image almost as soon as they hurt it. And I think everything they've done since has been in the right direction (or at least an honest attempt to, i.e., the Caddy that zigged). Sometimes it was baby steps, sometimes it was by leaps.

With that said, I am seriously excited to see what Cadillac has planned for this ATS. They've been doing everything right lately and I think they are indeed headed back to being able to, with a straight face, lay claim to the standard of the world.

@85ZingoGTR, good point. But if I recall when asked "what the difference between Cimarron and Cavalier?" the spokesman answered "5 grand". Cavalier was never worth 5 grand, as this fellow wrote it was 30 years ago.

Ibcheeky2 - Its not "serious mental issues", its how this industry works. All industries actually. One little product that turns out to be anything opposite of what a name brand represents, or a product that turns out to be so bad can hurt a company for a long time. Its all in the "brand image" and it plays a major role in the success or failure of a company. When I say "brand image" I mean as in the consumers outlook on the company. Kind of like when you go to a job interview looking like $hit. You may be an excellent employee and very knowledgeable in your field but they won't hire you if you don't look presentable. Call it mental issues or whatever you want. The Cimarron almost destroyed Cadillac and believe it or not Cadillac is still in the recovery process from it. I think Cadillac will be ok though. If Ford survived the horrors of the Pinto after they felt thst lawsuits were cheaper than making the car safer, so can Cadillac survive the horrors of the Cimarron which was simply a badge engineered Cavalier priced twice the amount the Cavalier was worth.

I like what Cadillac is doing and I bet they will bring something to the market that will undercut the competition on price and beat them in power, refinement and value. Cadillac is getting serious now.

AMERICAN_#! - I also wouldn't quite call the Cadillac Cimarron the world standard of quality either. Lets not forget that act of stupidity from GM that nearly left Cadillac out of existence. And even today Cadillac still struggles with the shadow left by that piece of $hit. Yeah that bad. GM litterally ruined a legendary name with that car. So I hate to break it to you buddy. But when it comes to quality, Cadillac is the last thing that pops into many peoples mind.

@AMERICAN_#!
Firstly, I wouldn't call Cadillac the world standard of quality. I have a Cadillac and I love it, in fact so much that I feel a bit guilty posting this. I could drive half way around the world in it and still not get tired of it. The body is almost bullet proof and the performance is phenominal. But between the mapholder falling down, the dashboard warping and coming out of place (which are both highly common problems in my particular model), and the fake wood and chrome trims, the quality sometimes just doesn't justify the amount I paid for it. Nonetheless, it only accelerates when I want it to...

XTS starts production late next year with the ATS following shortly after. If the XTS is a 2012, the ATS may be either that or a early model '13. Its not as far away as we think but I agree though, these cars need to come sooner.

At just a little under 60k the CTS-V is the biggest sleeper out there, and will bury just about any thing it comes up againts. However, if I sell you one you'll pay more than sticker and like it.

I have high hopes for this car. It should be based on the upcomming Alpha platform, which Holden developed. If this car is light enough to use the LNF from the solstice than it can see up to 290hp and 340tq. Light weight, turbo four with more torque than M3, and RWD, I'm hoping that this is the best caddy yet.

@yarddog82abn.. they are sitting on the Conv. Camaro because they new the coupe would cool off, then instead of a major mid cycle refresh, they just release the convertible and stretch a few more years out of the current setup.

and where did it say 4 years... i could see the 'ATS' hitting the market as a 2012MY, that's if GM stick to their words and pushing projects through in a timely manor.

not thrilled about the name "ATS", but I cant think of a better name that stays with Cadillac's naming convention

4 years, why not in 2 years?....

GM dose that alot, they show us something badas, then they water it down, and give us the end product that looks nothing close to what they promiss us. Well the Camaro was close, I'll give them that, but everything els, has fallen short... Good job GM, just another reason you find your self in the place you are today...

And hurry up with delivering us the Conv. Camaro, what's taking so long!....

This car won't see a V8, so people can get that out of their minds. Since all other companies are downsizing the engines of their high spec models, Cadillac will follow suit. All the German manufacturers have proven they can pump out huge horsepower and torque from small displacement engines, so Caddy will have to prove it can out 3 a 3-series.

This is awesome - and also this was SUPPOSED to be offered as a Pontiac too. Oh well, at least we get something from the platform that's been rumored since 2003...

I still question the actual size of this car will be that much smaller than the CTS. The CTS isn't all that big right now - so it will obviously move up a size next generation but it makes for some inside competition for the time being.

The CTS also can be had for under $30,000 real money - so I'm interested in where this will be fitting in as far as money is concearned too. You can't have a sub $25,000 Cadillac IMO when freakin' Buick Regals start at near $28,000.

Again - I'm a huge fan of this car to be but the business case is not well thought out with the current CTS's positioning.

saabaru, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Turbo-6 from the SRX boosted to about 400hp for a V-version. Especially up against a 330hp S4 or the next M3 that's supposed to have a smaller engine.

@ American
And the president of china drives a Buick.
That's great and all but from one American car fan to an obvious onther. When you talk like that you make people not like American cars. It' makes American car fans look dumb because you can't have a serious comment. I have owned 2 Caddys and would take the new CTS-V over any BMW or MB but I would not say it like you just did. Come on man let's get it together.

I know they won't do it because of CAFE, but the V better have eight pistons. The 2.0L turbo ecotec should be base engine along side the 3.6 high feature v6. Then the 6.0 or 6.2L pushing 450.

@ AMERICAN_#!,

If BMW copied Cadillac they wouldn't still be building interiors that are embarrassingly old fashioned and outdated. Who really sits in a BMW 3 series, looks at the dash and say's "this is nice and modern"?

I am very excited about this vehicle, but let's hope ATS doesn't survive as the name... although ATS-V does have a nice ring to it. I guess they don't have much choice though, BTS sounds like a bowel movement. I would like to see a real hardtop, not folding, but hang from the roof of your garage type. Maybe they have some leftover mechanisms from the Pontiac G6 folding hard top, otherwise sounds expensive.

@American#: I love your views man. How's that "American muscle" Camaro treating you?
