Chrysler will reportedly assemble the Fiat 500 two-door minicar at the automaker’s Toluca, Mexico, assembly plant that currently builds the Chrysler PT Cruiser and Dodge Journey crossover. The powertrain for the Italian-designed car could be assembled at Chrysler’s Trenton, Michigan, plant.
The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous sources, said that Chrysler’s new owner, Fiat, was seriously considering U.S. assembly of a slightly larger compact car based on a Fiat design. The car would likely be sold as a Chrysler and would potentially be based on the Fiat Linea, itself a sedan version of the popular Grande Punto.
A Chrysler spokesman declined to comment on the company’s future plans, though Chrysler and Fiat have already confirmed that the 500 will be sold in the U.S. in about a year.
