Jeez……..they NEVER learn, do they? How do they justify their salaries at Ford when they come up with the most asinine ideas? WHY dilute the Mustang name??

Remember many many years ago when the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the hottest and best selling nameplate for GM? And remember when Oldsmobile started to put the “Cutlass” name on almost every car they produced? And they used that name on some really horrble cars. Needless to say the Cutlass name, hell, the Oldsmobile brand is now history. Sure, let Ford dilute the Mustang name, and we can watch history repeat itself….

Ford can go ahead and make it as long as they don’t screw up, they change the name, and they don’t just make it a four door mustang with a different name. Bringing the Falcon would be better though.

Mini is about to spin off the Clubman and an SUV: the Z4 and TT both have ’shooting brakes’ which are cooler than the convertible and coupe.

Besides, the four door 911 is coming, which is a much more heinous crime if you want to get real whiny.

No. No matter the performance or the retro craze it is a complete sign of Fords disrespect for the name plate that has been there for 42 years without the need for a four door. And what is retro about a Mustang with four doors? The Mustang has never had four doors in a production model. NEVER. The concepts existed and the inteligent decision makers at the time knew it wouldn’t fly. You want a Belair make a car and name it a Belair. The Mustang is not a Chevelle. THe Chevelle was always a two door or four door car. The Chevelle isnt a Ford but I can’t think of a car off my head that ford had to compete or was as good as the Chevelle.

The Holden Comadore by the way is not the first Aussie car to become a GTO. LOOK IT UP the original GTO was imported from a Holden Design back in the Day.

I can understand them wanting to use the mustang platform to create different vehicles, but I think the idea of using the mustang look and name on vehicles other then a 2 door coupe is retarded, it would be a huge mistake

Anyone ever hear of the Belair? How many variants of the Belair were there? Lest you forget, we are in the middle of a retro design period. So far, the only things that have come out of the retro craze are the iconic whole vehicle designs. The PT Cruiser, Thunderbird, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger (and if I must, the HHR). That’s it. If anyone thinks all the retro tricks have been played, think again. Ford is now turning the next page and pulling out some of the different cues from back in the 50s and 60s like a sport wagon based off the 2dr coupe. And they all retained their original namesake. Unless of course, you would rather have a manufacturer try to lie and market you to death convincing you it’s NOT a Mustang? Give me a break. Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Just like GM shouldn’t have imported a rebadged Holden and called it a GTO.

What would any of you prefer, a 4dr sedan or wagon with Mustang styling, or a Ford 500 with scoops, ground effects and a bigger engine. I’ll take the Mustang style and don’t lie to me by giving it a false name.

Just relax a bit folks. This is obviously someone just ‘thinking out loud’. But look at all the successful hatches and ’shootingbrakes’ done by european makers. I say wait to see the finished product (if it ever happens) before getting your blood pressure up. This might just be a strategical trial balloon.

Somebody photoshop one of these things… make a Shelby wagon, black with gold stripes, hood pins and torque thrust wheels. Ford, do not call these “Mustang”. Don’t ruin the only reputable car you have going for you.
