Remember many many years ago when the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the hottest and best selling nameplate for GM? And remember when Oldsmobile started to put the “Cutlass” name on almost every car they produced? And they used that name on some really horrble cars. Needless to say the Cutlass name, hell, the Oldsmobile brand is now history. Sure, let Ford dilute the Mustang name, and we can watch history repeat itself….

No. No matter the performance or the retro craze it is a complete sign of Fords disrespect for the name plate that has been there for 42 years without the need for a four door. And what is retro about a Mustang with four doors? The Mustang has never had four doors in a production model. NEVER. The concepts existed and the inteligent decision makers at the time knew it wouldn’t fly. You want a Belair make a car and name it a Belair. The Mustang is not a Chevelle. THe Chevelle was always a two door or four door car. The Chevelle isnt a Ford but I can’t think of a car off my head that ford had to compete or was as good as the Chevelle.

The Holden Comadore by the way is not the first Aussie car to become a GTO. LOOK IT UP the original GTO was imported from a Holden Design back in the Day.

Anyone ever hear of the Belair? How many variants of the Belair were there? Lest you forget, we are in the middle of a retro design period. So far, the only things that have come out of the retro craze are the iconic whole vehicle designs. The PT Cruiser, Thunderbird, Mustang, Camaro, Challenger (and if I must, the HHR). That’s it. If anyone thinks all the retro tricks have been played, think again. Ford is now turning the next page and pulling out some of the different cues from back in the 50s and 60s like a sport wagon based off the 2dr coupe. And they all retained their original namesake. Unless of course, you would rather have a manufacturer try to lie and market you to death convincing you it’s NOT a Mustang? Give me a break. Don’t piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Just like GM shouldn’t have imported a rebadged Holden and called it a GTO.

What would any of you prefer, a 4dr sedan or wagon with Mustang styling, or a Ford 500 with scoops, ground effects and a bigger engine. I’ll take the Mustang style and don’t lie to me by giving it a false name.

Naming the Ford sedan a Mustang: Not so much.
Hope to god that the report just got “a Ford sedan and wagon based on the Mustang” confused with “it’s going to be badged a Mustang”. I can see a Falcon and a Country Squire from Ford, and then a new Town Car and Mark IX. I’m guessing Ford still has rights to the Falcon seeing how it’s still marketed in Australia. Then they get back a “global brand.”

Ive seen the Sedan and Wagon 64 1/2 Concepts and I felt the Sedan was a bit much. The wagon had a fairly polished look to it and at the time would have been a good car to go with the Mustang. This however is not the time for a Mustang wagon or sedan. In 64 and the preceding years he Mustang was simply designed to be a comuter car; NOT a performance or sport car. The Mustang did not become a true GT car until with Ford backing a few enthusists like and best known Mustang tuner Carol Shelby tuned and primped the cars into true pure blooded pony cars that spit rubber and shoot gasoline. The Mustang then wasn’t a teens speed dream or an adults mid-life crisis car now its the pinacle of what(to me anyways) driving is. Nothing fancy just simple technology that has power you can count on. The wagon/sedan no longer fits the definition of the Mustang or its consumer market. If you make a car that completely violates the public image of a car (especially one that holds such a deep root in the culture of our nation) you complete debase the value and victory of the line. I hate Ford and always will but I love Mustang and I will always have a car with the pony and tri-bar delicately placed on the fender. However if for trucks screw Ford ill buy a Duramax. If Ford does this I know people who will completely disown Ford including myself. This car is deeply rooted into my childhood and teenage memories and I cannot even use the word here that I would use to descirbe the idiots at Ford if they do this. PLUS MUSTANGS AND F-SERIES ARE THE ONLY PROFIT BRINGERS TO FORD!

I could see a return of the Coupe/Convertable/Fastback which I think would give Ford more diversity in the brand that its looking for. I see this path as one failed to start and Mustang lovers everywhere will not buy these bastard children with Mustang Logos slapped on.

My advice to ford would be more engine and suspension options. Offer a Mach I model with the attached shacker induction system and an advanced engine tune and keep it out like the 01-04 Mach I’s. Give the GT different rear end gears and air induction options. I always liked the Idea of the GT500 so I say lighten it up, keep the SuperCharged 5.4L V8; however as a cheaper option make a GT350 with the SVT SuperCharged 4.6L from the 03-04 Cobra. Ford also launched the the new BOSS line of crate motors! BRING BACK THE BOSS! The BOSS 302s an 429s where top sellers in the day. Also since gas is again becoming a problem why not back track to where SVO left of and offer Turbo V4 (don’t like em but better than a sedan)or even a Turbo V6(Carrol Shelby Sells Performance Turbo V6s and manufatures them along side the GT-H). I dunno just my view.

Oh and the MustangII was not a failure they actually set sales records (sales tripled in 74 or the previous year. 73 also bein the last year for a convertable mustang till 83) and originated the evolution of the 302 to the 5.0 all Foxbody and SN95 owners know and love. The size and suspension of the car also led to the developement of the Foxbody platform which had an unchanged frame from 79 – 04. The 05 mustang was the first full redesign of the Mustang since 1979.

Do a Google search for “mustang shooting brake” (LLN won’t let you post URLs?) and look at the first three hits (particularly the third one). This has been discussed before and apparently the original mustang had a hatch variant, but I dunno. If you make a sedan with Mustang styling cues that’s one thing, but at least change the name.
