Report: Ford to kill Lincoln Mark LT pickup

09/03/2007, 2:42 PM

By Nick

Ford plans to end production of its Lincoln Mark LT pickup truck — the second Lincoln pickup to fall short of expectations and receive the axe, a new report claims. The Mark LT has been on sale for less than three years, and 2008 model vehicles will be the last, insiders say.

According to supplier sources cited by Automotive News, the Mark LT was slated for a major overhaul alongside the next-generation F-150 next year, but those plans have been dropped.

Production capacity designated for the Mark LT is expected to be reassigned to the F-150, the report says. To fill the gap left by the Mark LT, Ford plans to offer a “Platinum” series F-150.

Sales of the Mark LT have totaled 28,117 since its introduction, according to the trade publication. Ford originally targeted 20,000 units per year.

Good. There is no place for a simply rebadged ‘luxury’ truck.

I think that a King Ranch is more desirable.

Bryce, agreed. The King Ranch made more sense.

Next to the Escalade EXT, the Mark LT was a seriously bad idea.

About time they got rid of it. It was nothing more than a Ford F150 with a fancier grille. The Escalade EXT put on much more garnish inside and out and has a more powerful engine to distinguish it from the Avalanche and, although i don’t like both, The Escalade was much better at hiding its roots and appealing to the richer folk.

Finally! I got into this at the auto show and the door had that tin can 83 Granada sound. The seat looked like hell also. They should make the Navigator look like the MK X Call it the MK N or something. The current one is hideous Lincoln has the potential but they are just dropping the ball .

Agree with Bryce.. I’m typically not a Ford backer but if there was any truck out there I would buy between $35 and $50 grand… it would be the King Ranch.

I’d go with the King Ranch.

Wow, canceling the F-150 with a Lincoln logo. GM figured out in the late 90s a Tahoe with a different face wouldn’t sell as well as a completely styled specific model. They also didn’t make the Escalade EXT a full-on pickup. GM has been absolutely annihilating Ford in the luxo-truck realm. Ford took too long to get it, and it was already far too late and far short when they came up with a strategy.

Back to the drawing board boys.

Oh well. This one was a little better than the first, maybe the third time is a charm? Honestly, I’d rather drive a Ford pickup rather than a Ford pickup with a Lincoln badge.

It was nothin more then a F-150 trim level, I never understood why lincoln would have this truck

uhh… duh! If you can command a profit premium while still adding to F150 sales why the hell wouldn’t they? This goes along the same damn lines as Chevy and GMC trucks… why do they need both? Sales of the Silverado and Sierra combined topple the F150s sales so why the hell don’t they? Just have one division handle trucks, let there only be one model with different trims.. call it the Silvierrado for all I care. Personally I say let GMC handle the trucks, give them a dedicated purpose.. or scrap the entire division and let Chevy handle it… offer the “Sierra” as an upscale trim on the Silverado. Just quit with the redundancy already.

^ yeah but they COULDNT command a profit premium, thats why they failed again. Nobodys that stupid.

C’mon guys, that’s not even the ‘07 LT for the pic!

Anywho, I think that the truck was ill-conceived but as a Lincoln fan I am sad to see another product phased out.

I can’t wait till Jag is sold so Ford can put some money into this division.

This truck is very nice but Ford is right, it would make a much better F150. People are turned off by rebadged vehicles, it shows a lack of imagination.

Fancy pants F-150. Unnecessary to say the least. I dunno… the idea of a luxury pickup truck was always a ridiculous one IMO. Trucks are work vehicles… who’s gonna use an LT for any sort of hard work? Sport trucks I can understand, but not luxury ones.

Thank goodness. This truck like all other trucks are unnecessary and ugly. This truck in particular was a car to forget the second it was seen in auto shows and showroom floors.

In a bout a year or two we should be reading :Ford to kill Ford due to slumping sales, General Motors sees triple digit gains on it’s way back to 75% market share. Of course, this will be after the demise of Toyota, Honda, Volkswagon, BMW and Mercedes which is already happening.

Hey, it sold alot more than the Ford Blackwood and actually sold Cadillac 2-1 for a while.

I don’t understand the concept of a Luxury Truck though, and I would choose the King Ranch over this simply because I wouldn’t have to worry about the chrome or interior so much. Nice truck, but I don’t believe they advertised and promoted it enough.

Sleep well my pretties, the end of Ford is near…

Wow…

So because Ford is killing a slow selling luxury pick-up, all you guys start screaming about how Ford’s going to foreclose. It’s not misfortune, Cadillac has sold enough to keep in production but their figures are much lower.

Sunshine, not all trucks are unnecessary or ugly. I think the Dodge Ram trucks are more unique than most sedans out there, and the rest of the competition looks pretty good compared to cars. Hey, that’s just my opinion, but I wouldn’t use anything else besides a pick-up to tow my small boat, or trailers. There aren’t many alternatives on the market anyways…

So what’s your solution, huh?

Um, Jay, it is pretty much a widely known fact that Ford motor company is a hurtin unit right now. And with General Motors pretty much eating their lunch right now (Have been for decades), there aren’t many Ford hopefulls left who give a crap about whether they stay in business or not. Folks have left Ford for dead finding that GM builds the best, most reliable, highest wuality products you can buy.

Certainly not something you get from a POS Ford product. Everyone believes it’s only a matter of time before Ford closes their doors for good. Get with the program and stop being a brainless idiot.

Not to upset feelings, but your full of **** GM_Sales.

Ford is in a better position than GM at the current moment, which isn’t due to it’s American market but Europe. Ford has fewer brands to manage, fewer platforms and has increasing market in Europe. While GM explores China and India, Ford has already been in those markets for quite some time, and yet is also getting a better foothold in the European market.

I’m just gonna stop there, because there’s no use in arguing with children who have no clue what products their talking about, or economy; I have owned Ford my whole life, I know many of their products inside and out, so don’t even dare to argue about the vehicles themselves. I have sat in Chevrolets many times, and let me say, Ford often sets the bar.

A4, they obviously were commanding a higher profit if 20-some thousand people bought one, it’s not like this thing cost Ford that much more to build. I’m pretty sure it was scrapped because Mullaly realized it was a redundant product. This way they’ll still get that extra profit but with the numbers going into the F150 column.

I hope Ford has finally learned its lesson about trying to sell a pickup truck through its Lincoln division. I’m surprised they wasted valuable development dollars on the Mark LT considering the Blackwood fiasco. Now Lincoln needs to focus on reestablishing itself into a true competitor in the luxury vehicle market.
