Talks between General Motors and Renault-Nissan are moving slowly with little momentum as a mid-October deadline looms, according to the Detroit News. The Renault-Nissan group had hoped to begin a full-scale analysis of purchasing costs across all three companies, but GM reportedly wanted to limit the study to a handful of vehicles and a few dozen parts. “We see some resistance” there, a source told the News. The sources suggest there is some speculation as to whether GM is serious about the partnership, or if it simply agreed to the study because of the pressure investor Kirk Kerkorian applied to the automaker.

Good. I for one see no reason for GM to join any alliance with Renault/Nissan as they have nothing to gain from a partnership. Kerkorian did this for two reasons: to increase the stock price of GM and to bring Ghosn into the mix. The former is fine by me, the latter is a joke.

Just a feeling as none of us are insiders, but personally I think Ford would be a better fit.

It is interesting that this is being reported as GM footdragging. However, it is Nissan is not doing particularly well. Renault does nothing at all in the US. Pay-off Kerkorian and be done with this foolishness.

I agree the Renault/Nissan deal doesn’t look too good, but who is willing to forge an alliance with GM? Honda? Volkswagen? BMW? Or even more extreme, Ford? There aren’t that many options left.
Suzuki is trying to distance itself from GM, Toy Ota is never interested in partnerships, Porsche is too exclusive, DaimlerChrysler has enough problems as it is…I just don’t see who’s left that’s interested.

1c3d0g, Without GM, Suzuki’s automobile business gets a lot smaller. GM has reduced its stake, but still owns substantial equity in Suzuki. And lest we not forget, GM and Toyota have been partners in the NUMMI Alliance since 1983. Chevy Nova? Chevrolet/Geo Prizm? Pontiac Vibe? Ring a bell?
As for those other companies you mentioned, they know what you don’t. GM is the world’s largest auto manufacturer. As such, it brings considerable assets to the table. If there were a way to make it work, any and all of them would kill to partner with GM.

Who say’s GM even needs an alliance ? They seem to be making a pretty damn good recovery all on their own…..if anything, Richard is 100% correct, other auto makers need GM more than GM needs anybody else.
