Report: GM/Saab used human cadavers for crash tests

General Motors' Saab division purportedly used human bodies donated to science in crash tests, according to a Swedish newspaper. "For certain things, it’s important to use cadavers," Claes Tingvall of the Swedish Road Administration told Expressen.

Mr. Tingvall said the tests involved "people who had donated their own bodies." He said using real bodies helps develop better crash dummies and, not surprisingly, provides the best possible idea of what would happen to a living human in a crash.

GM used a total of ten cadavers for the project, according to Tingvall.

Saab would not confirm or deny the reports. "We conduct our own research and try to find other methods to achieve our results, with the help of computers, for example,” said Saab spokesperson Christer Nilsson. "We are with GM through thick and thin," Nilsson told the newspaper.

  15. ?? Kakalover, is that supposed to be funny? Dude, I know you're desperate to gain respect and leave some legacy on LLN, but it won't happen with those weak shitstains you're trying to pass off as "jokes."

Anyways, your reputation is that of a rampant cockswallowing, bunghole-shredded cum receptacle. It suits you really well, don't fight it! LOL!!!

  16. hey, there is no substitute for the real human body. I know I shouldn't say this, but I always get excited when called to an accident where there are fatalaties. You guys never get a chance to see it, but seeing someone ripped apart after a crazy accident stirrs up certain things inside you. Maybe thats why most of us troopers are a bit pschyco. The human body is very fragile, last week I saw a lady with her arm ripped off and her leg only hanging by a string of muscle tissue. Nasty but exciting.

  19. This is an old story. I've heard about this years ago. Nothing wrong with it, they donated there bodies to science and their already dead so they can pretty much do whatever they want with them. Don't think other companies aren't doing it too.

  23. Rafa, if you see what I see every week, you would be just as messed up in the head as I am. Next time you get pulled over by a state trooper, be aware he or she is mentally unstable, and the law always takes the side of law enforcement, giving us the freedom to take out our frustrations on you. Don't be shocked by this, it happens every single day across this great land of the free. Remember those new york cops who got nothing for shooting a guy over 50 times turning his black body into swiss cheese? Clearly they were guilty, but set free, why do you think that is? Thats America, don't like it, move to Europe or Canada, cops like us would never get away with the things we do over there. I love this country!

Comment by trooper1, posted on May8 at 9:06 pm
  24. American cops are messed up indeed but I agree that nothing provides the best example of test sample than actual human bodies. They're donated, they're dead, better use them for something else than fertilizer.

I rarely comment on here anymore but I’m compelled to. You tarnish the trust worthy work of the vast majority of law enforcement men and women in America. The fact that you think the abuses that you enjoy are one of the advantages of being in America, disgusts me. You are a small man if you need to use a position of power and authority to gain pleasure whether by inflicting or observing. There are people that are able to witness some of the brutal realities of life and death. I am grateful for them because they usually apply that ability in a way that helps others who are suffering. Yours is for a self-indulgent thrill.

Anyway, about the article, i would never take part in it but I’m sure in some way, at some time I will benefit from some of the research. Kind of disgusting though. Get Real made a good point about examining actual accident data.

  27. As far as this actual article goes… what's the big deal? These cadavers were donated to science by the people who actually occupied those bodies before their deaths… Engineering safe cars is a science and crash dummies only provide a certain amount of useable data… it's sure as hell a more worthwhile endeavor than just wanting your body either put in some hole in the ground or incinerated. People need to just get over any stigma of "creepiness" surrounding such things.. because once you die, your body is nothing but an empty vessel and a giant lump of dead organic mass that's only going to decompose anyway… So why not use such to ensure safer, healthier lives for those who are still living?

Oh… and as far as Mr. Trooper goes… If you are actually a police officer - you're a fucking disgrace of a cumstain. It's bad enough that there are those officers out there that abuse their position and tarnish the reputation of the actual good ones out there… but to then have one who blatantly brags and seems proud of such abuses? You take worthlessness to a whole new level. Just remember pal… every bad cop eventually gets whats coming to them. You seem so smug about those NYC officers getting let off for killing those kids… Well, you know what? They may have escaped those criminal charges, but they're going to get their asses handed to them during the civil case and then they'll be spending the rest of their natural lives working three jobs just to pay the settlements. Any cops that abuse their position do so because they're cowards who hide behind their badge in an effort to make up for their own inadequacies and they work the jobs they do because deep down they know they could never be gainfully employed elsewhere, so they might as well continue on their state-funded charity welfare. But then again… I can't blame them for being corrupt because they're too stupid to really comprehend the actual purpose of their jobs, nor the laws they're meant to uphold. It's just a shame for the countless good, well meaning cops out there, because not only does it tarnish their name and reputations, but it's douchebags like you that get many of them shot.

  29. Err, I can't help thinking something has been lost in translation, and mangled in the interviews.

A body donated to science doesn't go to a company like Saab or GM. It goes to a university or medical school. IIRC it was such institutions that used cadavers and even live volunteers to conduct crash tests in the '50s and '60s before crash test dummies were developed. This explains why Saab would say "We conduct our own tests" (i.e. independently of university research with cadavers).

Real crashes are analyzed, but can't provide the same controlled conditions—speed, trajectory, impact, seatbelt use etc all have to be worked out from the aftermath.

  32. trooper1, Your attitude and disrespect for people is pretty disgusting. You seem to have a false sense of invincibility and security wearing that badge. The problem you will find is that one of these days you will disrespect the wrong person. Being that you are routinely on the streets exposed, you will become a target for someone with a rifle and a scope. Then your comrades can be entertained and amused as they squeegee your remains out of your squad.

  42. Some of you may want to reconsider your opinions on the subject.

The Bodies were donated by the previous tenants of said bodies or by the families for whatever reason.

These are bodies used for medical training from testing new surgical techniques to training new surgeons. The use to human bodies to help develop new crash dummies is a fair use.

It is not desecration to use a willing surrendered corpse for testing.

Heck before there were crash test dummies, the Auto industry used a whole hell of a lot more cadavers.

This is not nasty, gross, or somehow evil. This is SCIENCE carried out ethically and morally for the good of those alive and still living.

Grow up or go home, cry babies.

Comment by Blakkarr, posted on May9 at 1:17 pm
  43. ^^ Exactly Blakkarr… it's not like these cadavers were somehow stolen and used… They were donated to science by those who previously occupied those bodies.. again, it beats immediately getting thrown in some hole to decompose and if nothing else, it's because these people wanted their bodies to be used for research, that everyone else can lead safer, healthier lives. I really don't get people's hang-ups about this…

Comment by AMGoff, posted on May9 at 2:14 pm
  44. AMGofff: exactly. Some people just have their panties twisted because it's GM doing this. I bet if it was some OTHER company everyone would be praising them for all the good work and so forth. There's a bunch of hypocritical b!tches here.
