According to a new report by Motor Trend, GM has scrapped any plans for building a new Pontiac GTO as a follow-up to the current model. Recently, there has been some speculation that GM might replace the much-criticized GTO with a new model based on the same platform as the forthcoming Chevrolet Camaro. While GM is considering a rear-wheel-drive offensive, it appears the GTO will not be part of that plan. Other possible nameplate revivals that could use a new RWD architecture include the Buick Velite and Chevy Impala. Recently, we cited a report suggesting the company might use the Camaro platform for a new Firebird or Trans AM. (Show right is the 1999 GTO concept. If GM builds another GTO, it’s widely expected to use a more agressive design like that of this GTO concept).

thats to bad, the current model does look like crap, but had they gave it some style it could have been a hot car…

Yeah, right. MT was also the magazine that said the Camaro was dead a few months back. Until GM makes an announcement it’s just speculation.
Tell me what other car on the market for 32K has 400HP, 2 doors and RWD with a 6 speed?? That’s right none.

What’s the thinking here!? “The current GTO didn’t sell like we were hoping, so … it must be a bad idea.”
Oh, and… “We don’t believe in retro design.”
Is that it!? If GM after all of its troubles still can’t see whats right in front of them, they deserve to go bankrupt.
Personally, I’d much rather see a new RETRO STYLED!! GTO than a new “Camaro Twin” Firebird.
The basis…duh!!… ‘69 GTO Judge … of course!! Why is this so hard to get!?

I’ll have to take nikivee at the $32K price quote, but this is the exact same problem with resurrecting the F-body crap. The wiggers and trailer people who like that sort of car will (for the most part) never be able to leave the Marlboros, Budweiser, and Meth alone long enough to put together $32K. And the type of people who can come up with $32K are gonna buy a G35 coupe, cause thats what’s happening today, not some retro rehash of an antiquated design. The only people who could afford to buy the latest GTO were the ones trying to re-live the glory days of their youth. Its gonna be the same thing with a rehashed Camaro, to make a quality modern Camaro with a V8, the price is gonna be well north of $30K which does not make it the affordible pony car that the original was. Todays affordable pony car is the Civic SI, and GM (or really anybody) cannot put together anything at the $21K price point beyond a 4 cyl FWD subcompact. The market dynamics have simply changed and created the problem where the price to produce a quality V8 RWD American coupe is well beyond that of what their target demographic can afford, which will always translate into dissapointing sales.

Although unorthodox, I completely agree with madcapp.
The GTO didn’t sell well because it was overpriced. Plain and simple.
A 30k Camaro may be somewhat sucessful, but only due to a lot of baby boomers trying to recapture their youth.
Should be interesting to see what happens with the Challenger.

In the same march 2006 Motor Trend article (page 16), the reporter states that “GM has seen G6 sales improve to the point that it can sustain Pontiac for years to come”
What?? http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/01/31/weak-pontiac-g6-sales-prompt-output-reduction/

The G35 is quite different from the GTO. The G35 is a refined Japanese style sports car. Don’t get me wrong, I love the G35/Z350, but the GTO offers something more in the way of raw, unrefined power. I’d much rather drive the GTO than the G35 but that’s just me. Which brings me to another point — Madcapp, why do you insist that everyone who drives an American muscle car is white trash?
I think the GTO hasn’t lived up to its sales potential because it lacks the interior refinement of most cars at its price range. This is where the G35 has the GTO. There are no options aside from the transmission – and the Manual is not nearly as good as it could be. In typical GM fashion every technology comes from the mid-80’s. A few luxury amenities would go a long way to making the GTO a much better car. There is nothing that sets it ahead of the Mustang or Charger/Challenger in buyer’s minds. Going retro – in copycat fashion – would not offer anything new other than naustalgia. Add an optioin for navigation, update the climate control, update the seats, give it an iPod connection, etc. These are the things that will help it sell.

it didnt sell well because it looks like an early 90s grand am….not because of its crappy interior.

Style is, for the most part subjective, substance is not.
some like the understated looks of the GTO versus the overstated looks of the 99 Concept.

GTO Man – calm down! If you’re into American Muscle that’s great – but don’t be surprised that others aren’t… Furthermore, don’t be surprised that many question the quality of American automobiles.
As for “fit and finish” in the GTO, it’s nothing but a port of the Vauxhall VXR or Holden Monaro with a Pontiac badge that has a weak interior (and the name GTO thrown on to attempt traction in the American market). But – I guess we all have our own style… Powerplant / RWD – now that’s a step in the right direction.
I can’t see the GTO being a prominent player. It just screams “last minute effort.”

GTO man clearly demonstrates the reactionary unstable trailer park nature of what I keep refering to as the “target demographic”. He’s demonstrated clearly that he’s a redneck to the core and wouldn’t possibly tolerate the notion that GM has made anything but wonderful cars for all of time. Sure He’ll buy a GTO, but do you want to be in his company? Remember that Adam Sandler movie where he went back to high school and drove a perfect mid 70s Firebird and everybody laughed their ass off at him for being a completely out of date redneck? GTO man is in that role every day in real life, he’s just not self aware enough to realize the absurdity of it. Somebody summed it up earlier, the latest GTO looks just like the early 90’s Grand Am that litters the front yards in the poor parts of town.

The Sandler movie you refer to is Billy Madison, where he played the spoiled son of a Millionaire – not a red neck. They laughed at him because he was out of date, not white trash. Another notch in your (mad)capp of ignorance.

I can tell a lot of people posting have never personally seen the new GTO. The car looks much better in person because you can see all the body lines that pictures wash out. As far as the interior goes, it is nothing like any GM product I have ever seen. It is BMW fit, finish, and materials. If you don’t believe me go to your Pontiac dealership and look for yourself. Sure it doesn’t offer the same luxuries as a G35 such as a navigation system, but they had to cut costs to get the price point down. The engine, transmission, and brakes (all used on the C6 Corvette) are expensive. Plus, if you are able to afford a $32K car, I sure hope you can figure out how to read a map. I have always owned imports due to their superior interiors and also could never figure out why GM still used pushrod engines. Now I know. Flat torque curve. I still own an import (the GTO), but that was after test driving G35, Audi S4, and z4.

Kirk, I’ve personally driven a GTO and I love it, I’m just trying to rationalize why others wouldn’t buy it. The only thing I didn’t like about it is that the shifter wasn’t short throw enough for my taste and that was a very minor complaint.

I am 65 and a retirered electricial engineer.
I have owned 8 new pontiacs since 1963.
currently have a 73vette/454/4spd & 97 GP GTP.
I tell you why I did not buy a new GTO:
1-Gas Guzzler (12mpg,premium gas, guzzler tax)
2-4 speed auto, only (needs 6 speed auto)
3-Ugly as sin, looks like a cavalier, or a melted bar of ivory soap.
4-No Trunk (a 7 cu/ft trunk is rediculous, the gas tanks takes up half the trunk, its standing up against the rear seat)
5-Too Expensive- $34K
6-Wheel Hop on hard acceleration, suspension does not work. Can’t get the 400HP to the road
Summary: GM can Rebadge anything, but that don’t make it so! It ain’t a GTO!!

1. The 6 speed GTO get 28MPG. My 04 is rated at 29 highway.
2. See #1
3. Ugly is subjective. It is not an aggresive looking car, but it is smooth and sleek and with a top speed of around 160MPH it helps to be a bar of soap.
4. Trunk is bigger than you think. I can fit plenty of luggage in my when we go on trips.
5. GT0’s can be had for around 28K to 29K if you look around
6. I get no wheelhop in my 04. But some do. That is the problem with an IRS rear.
7. It is a GTO. Get over it. Perfect formula. 2 dr coupe, rwd, big v8.
