Report: Hyundai cuts U.S. workforce by 46
By Drew JohnsonHyundai was one of just three automakers to post a sales gain during the month of January – the other two being Hyundai’s Kia division and Subaru – but that hasn’t stopped the Korean automaker from laying off some of its U.S. workforce.
According to an Automotive News report, Hyundai Motor America laid off 46 employees this week. Although that number doesn’t sound very significant – especially when other automakers are laying off workers by the tens of thousands – that represents over 8 percent of Hyundai’s 550 person-strong workforce. The majority of the lay offs were from regional sales and marketing offices.Hyundai failed to comment on the layoffs, but some Hyundai employees indicated the number of firings would have been far worse if the company didn’t post such strong January numbers.
Hyundai’s sales jumped 14.3 percent in January – totaling 24,512 units – while overall industry sales were down more than 37 percent.
