Report: Jaguar readying five-door coupe

09/30/2009, 6:58 PM

By Drew Johnson

Further blurring the line between coupe, sedan and wagon, Jaguar is reportedly readying a five-door coupe. Designed in the same vein as the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 5-Series GT, the compact hatch will replace the X-Type in the Jaguar lineup.

Codenamed RD7, the new model will be largely based on the RD6 concept (pictured), first shown in 2003. According to Edmunds, Jaguar was considering three and five-door models, but ultimately settled on the latter as it would be the volume seller.

The production vehicle will feature the sleek lines of a coupe and is also tipped to include suicide rear-doors. The rear hatch will swing open, which should allow for better use in situations with a low roof clearance.

Power for the production RD7 will come from a 2.7L diesel V6, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a range of gas and diesel powerplants. Thanks to its XF-based platform, the RD7 will feature rear-wheel drive, ensuring a sporty driving demeanor.

Although the entry-level premium segment is growing by the day – see Lexus’ LF-Ch concept – the RD7 is still a ways off. Jaguar is concentrating on its new sports car first, pushing the RD7’s launch back to at least 2013.

I say why not! It’ll be interesting to see their interpretation of this type of car!

Regardless of the name I think it looks outstanding, it looks like a proper hatchback rather than the heavy slope of the GT or the Sportback, although the Sportback is beautiful.

the coupes list will now follow these guidelines

1 door coupe – a bubble with wheels

2 door coupe – sportscar with engine in front

3 door coupe – pickup truck with some adventurous styling

4 door coupe – any sedan to come out of Germany in the last year

5 door coupe – a station wagon that tries to be cool

6 door coupe – a very smooth suv with absolutely no rear visibility

7 door coupe – not imaginable in our dimension

8+ door coupe – a bus

@2WheeledSpeed

EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!!!!

How exactly do you have a 5 DOOR Coupe with only 2 side doors??? Does that mean there are 2 doors on the back and one on the roof????

Coupes have 2 (two) doors. Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Just what did all of you expect when Tata took over Jaguar? Doesn’t Vishnu have 4 arms? Well there you go. Add in the old poop chute and it’s pretty damn obvious where they got their inspiration.

Speeeed3Z–

I don’t think you read the article correctly.

“Codenamed RD7, the new model will be largely based on the RD6 concept (pictured), first shown in 2003. ”

That is the first sentence in the 2nd paragraph

@Speeeed3Z- maybe I just have a good monitor, but I distinctly see two doors on the side shown in the picture…ONE handle, but two doors.

Unless you can see the other side of the car and there’s no doors there…in which case my monitor would be vastly inferior.

A coupé or coupe (from the French verb couper, to cut) is a closed car body style, the precise definition of which varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and over time. Coupés are often hardtopped sports cars or sporty variants of sedan (also known as saloon; see American and British English spelling differences) body styles, with doors commonly reduced from 4 to 2, and a close-coupled interior (i.e., the rear seat placed further forward than in a standard sedan) offering either two seats or 2+2 seating (space for two passengers in the front and two occasional passengers or children in the rear). Before the days of motorized vehicles, the word referred to the front or after compartment of a Continental stagecoach.

F50.. it’s hard to tell from that photo, but the RD6 concept pictured above has a front end very similar to the old S-type, not the XF. I’d assume that the newer RD7 will look more like the XF and XJ.. but if it’s supposed to be a coupe, why doesn’t it have the front end of the XK?
