Report: Maybach working on driver-oriented 62 S

08/23/2006, 7:45 AM

By admin

Back in December, Mercedes division Maybach unveiled the Maybach 57 S — an AMG-tuned version of the large ultra-luxury sedan. Billed as a driver-oriented version of the often chauffeur-driven car, the car has sportier suspension, increased output, and other performance enhancements. Now, Maybach is reportedly planning to unveil the Maybach 62 S — a similarly tuned version of the larger Maybach 62. According to Germany’s Auto-Presse, the car will have similar enhancements to the 57 S, with output in excess of 600 horsepower. An unveiling is expected by November.

Why would someone want to drive their own limo? Still it should be interesting.

Some people are ridiculously rich and feel like driving is a bit of a chore. Thats all. These rich people also want to roll with style. These are the people interested in purchasing this vehicle.

I know someone with a Maybach 62 and he drives himself, he has no chauffeur. To each his own I guess.

The Phantom outsells this land yacht almost 10:1 and is obviously superior.

Kinda sheds new light on the concept “wretched excess”. Amazing how they’ve given an answer to a question nobody was asking.

The only reason the Phantom is now better is because its a BMW.

Time to redesign the Maybach because the lower buck all new Sclass trumps this car in almost all categories. Besides, this car looks too much like the S class from the beginning. They better make the Exelero a four door in order to have a stab at the Phantom.

I’ve driven the 57S and experienced the 62. For high-speed autobahn work, a 62S makes perfect sense, dynamically, as the extra control offered by the new optional suspension settings and chassis tuning lend a further level of ultimate safety. Let there be no doubt though, the only place to be in a 62 is in the back, unless you are driving the family. It’s just unreal and completely over the top for sybaritic comfort. I’ve spoken with a leading Rolls Royce collector, with hundreds of cars, who personally drives his Phantom and considers it one of the finest automobiles he’s ever owned or driven. I’d prefer the back seat.
