As a quality redeemed company, Mercedes, I am disappointed that you offer many ranges of SUV’s which will be driven by clueless and arrogant soccer moms who will fail to appreciate the company’s history. For the people that do appreciate, please make a stick shift v12 S class, I’ll guarantee you a customer.

I like when ricers with japanese sounding names (usually end in bu, bi, ki, ku, ka, etc) (you can pick them off right away) always throw their two cents in when it comes to TURBOEZ, “N/A”, what works best, etc etc cause they’re used to ricespeak.

You can usually find tons of them in posts relating to turbos etc. Just because the word TURBO is used it doesn’t mean we’re talking about little crotch rocket civics. We’re talking legitimate german torque bruising monsters. Not little ricebags!

AMG’s move to a V12 isn’t so much about efficiency, it’s because their future designs are getting smaller, and the V12 block is too large.

yarddog has it right, if you’re ponying up for a V12 Merc fuel mileage is right up there with the number of cupholders on your priority list. You can now get a V8 in a Hyundai for piston’s sake, so why purposely narrow the gap that much more without making the other guy work for it?

Congrats, mercedes. You might actually meet CAFE requirements.
Yeah it sucks to see the v12 dissapear. It’s like two inline 6′s at an angle, yeah? that’s gotta be the smoothest configuration you can get.

v12 power can be had with a v8, especially with up to date engine technologies like VVT and direct injection. With shorter gearing and a high compression motor, you can effectively replicate the acceleration of a v12. the only caveat is the exhaust tone since it would run at a higher rpm.

Honda does this with 4 cylinders, even with the disadvantage of engine vibration and noise. It is certainly possible with a v8. This is where the future is headed. Get used to it.

I don’t think this would spell the doom for Maybach (at least not this by itself). The Maybach was never about the powertrain–ultra luxury, ultra customization, that was always Maybach’s allure. But sales have always disappointed, mostly because few people want to spend an extra 300 large for a gussied up S-class. It looked too much like an S-class, to boot.

AMG’s been proving Pagani with NA V-12 since day one. If the Zonda replacement ends up having a forced induction 8 cylinder, now THAT would get me bummed.

They shouldn’t ditch the V12′s. They need Flagship models that separates them from the rest of the Line-Up. There needs to be Leaders in the Automobile Market and Mercedes-Benz with their V12 Engines are Leaders in this Market! Keep them going! Don’t give up the V12.. They can try make it more efficient!

This means no more 738 ft lb ttV12 for the SL65 AMG Black series..bummer that was one sweet car. But I can’t complain about a 700 horse V8. So one way or the other, AMG will still have ridiculously powerful engines.
I didn’t think Maybach had much of a life beyond the current model anyway, and this just sealed the deal.

that is a good point about maybach, what will happen when this goes through, do they die off or convert to V8, personally i think they maybach could use a V16, kinda of a tribute to the pre war coach-built cars

Well, if future models from Mercedes are not gonna have 12 cylinders, and are not going to be designed with one in mind, I doubt Maybachs will be as well, since Maybach still doesn’t have it’s own model.

I wouldn’t doubt it if Mercedes just dropped Maybach in the current crunch. Really doesn’t matter to me, not much more than loaded Mercedes with a few neat features. If only they looked good as well, and had some publicity behind them (i.e., government officials, famous people, etc.).

I dunno, it seems like everyone is following suit on this. So, I think Mercedes should be OK

I wonder what it means for Maybach, though. Surely they can’t downsize the Maybach to a V8 as long as Rolls-Royce and Bentley are putting 12 cylinder cars on the market. I figure they’ve either got to kill the car or make a genuinely new model.

It is unbelievable that Mercedes Benz would throw their experience with V 12s away. There is an aspirational value to the 4 extra cylinders over a V 8 which no figures can match. A wrong decision but being Mercedes they will build good cars anyway. I guess those who want V 12s will move over to BMW instead.

I remember on Top Gear they featured a Brabus SL 6.5 with a Twin Turbo V12 with 900hp, and it still had a warranty, a buddy on mine, a general sales manager at a high-end Exotic dealer has the current SL 6.5 AMG, and it spanks his own Gallardo, and his brother F430, down grading motor for Benz just may hurt them, besides if you have the cash for a 600hp V12, I think “fuel efficiency” is the last thing on your mind…

screw turbos/superchargers! make a N/A engine with that much power and it will help mercedes in two ways: 1, people like n/a engines. 2. it would be more advanced than just dropping in a sc/turbo to make the same power. I actually liked the v12 in a 2006 sl600 i drove once. it was very smoooooth and had a butt load of power.

I have no trouble hearing that they will ditch the V12. The sound is better in a V8. i do not like supercharged engines. N/A engines is # 1. High Performance N/A engines are usually high RPM, and turbo engines are not. High RPM is fun, like the RS4 or M3 engines. Look at the RPM on the BMW 335, it is low.
