Report: Mercedes likely to produce S-Class four-door cabrio

12/11/2006, 2:15 PM

By admin

When rumors first broke in June that Mercedes was planning a four-door convertible concept car based on the Mercedes S-Class, enthusiasts around the globe were surprised, and perhaps somewhat confused.

Of course, the idea isn’t entirely new. In the 1950s, the German automaker offered a four-door convertible called the Mercedes 300.

But more surprising than the prospect of a four-door convertible concept are reports from Automotive News Europe today that the vehicle could become a production car within a year. A source within Mercedes told the trade publication the company will produce the niche V12 rag-top for the 2009 model year. The concept will be on display at the Detroit auto show in January. Because a hard top would be huge when folded? Not too mention all the moving parts to fold it. The rag top sedan look is so 90’s though.

I don’t know about this, no wait I do.

It’ll be like having your own parade all the time. You and your passengers will be obliged to wave and smile.

Needs suicide rear doors ala Lincoln’s 4-door converts/boats in the 1960’s.

Indeed a parade/beauty queen float.

But, still, why, why, why MB?

ANOTHER THING, WITH SUCH A HIDEOUS INTERIOR I WOULD BE ASHAMED TO DRIVE THIS THING. ONCE AGAIN THE CLS WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BETTER CHOICE AS THAT HAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL INTERIOR IS MAKE EVERY OTHER INTERIOR DESIGN LOOK **** AT MERCEDES.

Yeah, that will look great — soft top folded flush atop the trunk while the rear door quarter windows stick up proudly. What the hell is that all about? Obviously this is an illustration, and those quarter windows would have to disappear in a production model.. but I agree with the comment above, why not the CLS instead?

Stuart, the CLS interior is a six-year-old design lifted from the E-class. It’s extremely cluttered and looks and feels dated. Have you even been inside the new S-class?

12/12, 7:44 PM

Yeah Stuart, the new S-Class has a TOP notch interior, better than any of its competitors, and far better than the CLS. Get real

Yeah I been in both. The CLS is inspired by Classic Jaguar (as quoted by Mr Piefh the cheif designer of Mercedes himself). It has better quality then anything Merc produces and look beautiful as all magazines have said. The S-class look exactly like a rip-off 7 series interior looking almost identical to the 7 which is plain and boring in the first place. If i was in a convertible it was rather be a CLS then any other thing Merc offers.

P.S. I said things earlier in Caps because I am annoyed at how many Model Merc has. Its meant to be a premium exclusive brand but in the next few years will have some 20 totally diffrent models. Thats not good considering they also have Smart, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Maybach under the same umbrella. They at most should only have 10. Sad thing is all the other German companies are following.

I think it come to the point where the Mercedes name mean nothing now. As I said earlier I would rather buy Chrysler then anything Merc makes (Apart from SLR, ClS) because it is more exclusive then Merc and trust me I am a hardcore Mercedes enthusiast.

i think its a great idea.

Stuart- get over yourself, its just not good business practice to limit themselves to just a few models because it gets that much harder to make enough profit to come out with the newer and better model updates they do. they can afford to do this because of the name.

Stuart, every automobile magazine has stated that the S-Class has a beautiful interior too.
