You think they would have learned by now, that only the BRICKLIN had the best gull wing doors, because it was the only Production Vehicle in history with POWER gull wings that opened and closed at the touch of a button,,,,Unlike that Delorean trash with MANUAL doors!

wasn’t the current SLR supposed to be a throw-back to the gull-wing??? at least they were publishing both in marketing material…too late imo..

The original 300SL Gullwing was a thinly disguised race car. It was light, fast for its day, and very reliable. Its gullwing doors were not designed for aesthetic reasons but rather to accommodate the high and wide doorsills created by its racing space frame. The windows did not open but could be removed only by releasing two latches and pushing them out. This was to provide a way out of the carif it flipped over onto its roof thus disabling the doors and subjecting the occupants to possible incineration. The car was hot, hard to get in and out of, and by no means, a regular daily-driver. Actually, more roadsters (which were easier to drive but not as fast) sold than Gullwings. But, none of that mattered when you were blasting down the road at over 4,000 RPM showing that Ferrari what Prussian engineering was all about.
Please MB do it again – build a non-compromising, light, reliable, race/sports car Gullwing.

Hey, Mercedes guys…don’t you think is time to create a new icon instead of alterate the spirit of what was an unique car? Leave it by itself, any other try will just destroy the magic of 300 SL Gullwing. Where did you hide that inspiration of the past ? Bring it back and (re)start doing art.

it would make more sense to be the next SL as that is where the roots of the current one lies. Have a proper hartop like this and a convertible like the current one with same back and front as this.

Is Mercedes trying to exploit every niche possible? What will we see next? A one-door MPV?

If anything, this car should become that McLaren-Mercedes P8 mini-supercar. Think about it, it makes more sense of squashing the car inbetween the SLK and the SL, potentially sacrificing sales of both those cars. Make it a supercar, something wonderful. Carbon fibre monocoque, that gorgeous 6.3L V8 with 550HP, a manual gearbox, around 1300-1400kg, two seater, RWD, that brilliant styling…ah the possibilities.

it looks great, but it looks like MB stole the body from The Lotus Exige, also another great car. Obviously they have to make the gull-wings more practical by having them hinge midway to go inwards to thy don’t take up as much space. It would be a nice car to see on the road…

This car looks better than the current SLR McLaren. Should have built it rather than stick with the odd proportions of the SLR.

Bravo. The original 300SL Gullwing was one of the finest and most beautiful cars ever to wear a three-pointed star. A contemporary take on such a classic theme is bound to win many admirers. The original has stood the test of time remarkably well and remains a stunning and piece of elegant engineering that can be appeciated and enjoyed in equal measure. In other words, a successor cannot arrive too soon. So really a successor is well overdue. i have no doubt that if it’s made this car will sell like hot cakes. In fact, Mercedes can have my order today. I hope it will be a 2+2 with a V8 and will be between the SL and SLK in size. MB you have to make this car.

They took so many things from the 300SL and put it into the SLR..it doesn’t really make sense for this to be made. Not only that its another car on the market, and although the drawing looks good and all, it doesn’t even look nearly as good as the classic 300 SL Gullwing.

Out of the blue, I happen to know someone with one of these [original 1955] cars, and while the gull wing certianly is neat, and an icon…the fact of the matter is that if someone parks too close to you, you have to open the door just a little and crawl under the door and slip into the car if you can…getting dirty and looking exceedingly uncool in the process. If you’re a fat äss, don’t even think about it. I like the car, and its certianly not gonna happen every day, but the potential is there and you wouldn’t know it unless you had some experience with the car. I’ve seen it happen.
