MINI ’s lineup will soon expand by three models – with the Coupe, Roadster and Countryman – but the British automaker could have a fourth vehicle in the pipeline. The latest reports suggest MINI is readying a new-age version of its Moke off-roader.
The Moke moniker was thrown around as a possible nameplate for MINI’s upcoming Countryman crossover, but the automaker decided against it as the Countryman will be more of a soft-roader. However, MINI is planning a more rugged vehicle for the Countryman platform, making the Moke name a perfect choice.
According to Motoring File, MINI will show a concept version of the Moke at January’s Detroit Auto Show. Although based on the Countryman, expect the Moke to be a much more rugged and bare bones type of vehicle. The Moke will employ the Countryman’s all-wheel drive system and we wouldn’t be surprised to see some kind of open top setup.
If the Moke is met with a favorable reception, MINI could put the off-roader in production by late 2012 or early 2013.
