Mercedes-Benz will launch its next-generation S-Class flagship with an optional plug-in hybrid drivetrain, a new report finds. Mercedes-Benz showed off a plug-in version of its S-Class sedan – dubbed the Vision S 500 concept – at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Speaking with the UK’s Autocar, Mercedes-Benz R&D head Thomas Weber revealed the next-generation S-Class will launch with a plug-in hybrid option. The decision to launch the system in the S-Class will allow Mercedes to hide the added cost of the technology.
“It makes a lot of sense to bundle the high-price tech option to the sort of customers willing to pay for this sort of thing,” he said. Mercedes’ plug-in technology will eventually spread throughout its entire range.
Although Mercedes has yet to release any technical specs on its plug-in technology, early reports suggest the S-Class plug in could top 70mpg and spew fewer than 100g of CO2 per kilometer.
A pure electric version of the S-Class has been ruled – for now – as range concerns would limit the vehicle’s practicality. However, weight savings and improved engine technology will improve efficiency across the board, with the next-gen S-Class expected to see 10-25 percent in power while improving fuel economy by 25 percent.
