Report: Nissan leaning toward Infiniti Q revival

01/15/2008, 2:38 AM

By admin

Nissan’s premium Infiniti brand remains without a flagship model following the demise of the Q45 in 2006. The full-size car was positioned against the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class. While Nissan’s top executives are undecided on building a new Q, Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn is said to be warming up to the idea.

While the CEO is still “not convinced” Infiniti needs a new 7-Series-fighter, Mark Igo, Infiniti North America vice president and general manager, told Automotive News he thinks Ghosn is starting to “feel pretty good about it.”

Mr. Igo said he is certain a new Q would help boost Infiniti’s image, so he — along with many dealers — is pushing the company for a new range-topper.

I would love to see Infiniti offer a Q flagship sedan again. Hopefully, they properly execute it to be a real threat to the Lexus LS. They have come a long way in invigorating their portfolio (excluding the badge engineered Armada clone SUV), but their lineup still seems incomplete without a proper flagship sedan. I say build it, but engineer/design it to be competitive.

Not a bad idea given how successful they are with the G and M series. But a flagship is the one that gets more criticism. They need to pack it with so much technology and very high performance numbers to compensate the lack of styling which is already predetermined by you guys.

TOZO, you know what the problem is with the M? It’s poor rear crash tests which crossed it out from my purchase list.

I suppose if Infiniti really wants to be considered a premium brand they need the Q back.. But until they have a V12 and something serious in the $100.000 + dollar sphere I’ll still think of them more as a competitor of Acura than Mercedes, BMW or Audi.

The problem with Infinity aiming for a flagship model is; that they’re still Nissan. Decent cars, yes, but still Nissan, not Mercedes or BMW.

Rotman: Nissan does things better in many ways both ergonomically and technically than either germans. I’ve owned a bunch of them from back in the datsun days to the newer infinitis. The only thing not german about nissan is the lack of ego boost. But that really should come from owning italians, not mass produced germans.

When Infinity, aka Nissan, had a Q model dealers could not give it away at their cost. Q was not any better or worse then Lexus at that time which were selling like hot cakes. Perhaps Infinity learned lesson of the time and forgot it. The truth is that only Lexus managed to compete with BMW and Benz. Infinity has a good thing going with their M & G models, so I would keep memory of the past alive and keep Mr. Igo’s ego in check. Meanwhile I don’t see that many Lexus LS 460’s on the road: they maybe blending with smaller siblings, since they look alike or the model is not popular with wealthy public. Or may be recession affecting the segment.

I’m sorry but Infiniti doesn’t have the “image” of a 100K+ luxury car. It hasn’t earned world-wide recognition as a premium luxury brand. If I were to drop that kind of money, it’s gonna be on a mercedes s class (sorry bmw 7). Because at that price point, face it guys, you’re really just buying it to show off.

Does a flagship have the the uppermost model? Wouldn’t Infiniti benefit from a halo car just as well? Some sort of souped up G37S?

Infinity will benefit from ANY car they can sell in quantity and MAKE a profit on. This is business, not pedigree contest. The car should not cost them arm and a leg in maintenance (most of Infinitys are leased and dealer maintain the car at no cost on a lease). Benz has not been all that profitable due to poor workmanship, despite blame put on Chrysler group. They had their share of fiasco years.

Dealers are an automakers conduit to the outside/real world. Granted they often engage ego before engaging brain, but if enough believe and are pushing to have a new Q to flog it might be worth Infiniti’s time to listen.

The early Q’s got a bad rep because of the active suspension option that, once it failed, rendered the car virtually worthless because of the prohibitive cost to repair it. That was a long time ago and let’s face it- ‘Q’ is just a too cool a name to not revive.

Can’t hurt, as long as it makes money.

johnny, it’s not dealers it is the head of US sales arm that wants 7 series fighter. Those heads usually have swollen from self esteem testicles attached to them.
I never heard of suspension problem. The first Q had an ugly “belt” grille and the second was absolutely gorgeous. I drove both copies a lot, because my uncle lived in Manhattan and his Q’s (both versions) were parked in my garage/driveway. Since both were leased, the service manager came to the house to pick car for service every 6 months. From him I learned that I could get Q for the price of Legend (quite a difference in retail prices).

Why not? The old Q was bargain BMW. But faster in straight line.

I agree Infinity cannot compete with Lexus/BMW/Mercedes. Audi is trying to claw itself back to the top and Jaguar has been hanging on for years by the claws.

Selling an expensive car vs selling a product is what makes a car line a premium brand. Cadillac had it and lost it.

Infinity was not ever and is still not accepted as a “premium”.

meanpants555: Why a souped up G37? Why not just put more power to the GT-R and add some luxury to it, 50% different sheet metal, making it a much cheaper Audi R8 contender? I’d actually buy one…

^ Exception to the above is Infiniti’s G coupe. If they stay close to that formula and work away at it, it’ll be the anti-3-series for the next few generations

corvette’s right, there’s a reason Infiniti discontinued the Q, but I bet a really well done revival Q would sell. Lexus’ first few LS sedans were lull-me-to-sleep boring, but then the LS 460 comes out, with new styling and tech, and the LS is reborn. Infiniti is on the edge of its new technology renaissance with all the gadgets in the EX 35. It has the know-how to make a Q very good. I think they should do it.

I leased a Q45 in 1991, which was a helluva car. Thats the one with the grille that wasn’t a grille. It was just an emblem. In 1994 they added a big (and heavy) grille, which really took the car new a higher level of sophistication, and I bought a 1995 example of that.

It was a fantastic car. It was classy, yet sporty, with a very handsome design. A big 4.5L V8, 300hp, rear-wheel drive, limited slip diff… that thing flew. Very nice interior. It had that classy Infiniti analog clock, nice wood grain all over, very nice leather seats, climate control, power EVERYTHING (including the headrests), BOSE sound system with a 10 CD changer. Big comfy backseat too. I really liked it. I installed a Shogun body kit on it when they came out with one– made it look very BMWish.

After that model ended in 1996, the car really turned into an old fart’s car. But their styling department has been impressing the **** out of me for the last generation or two of vehicles, and I would love to see what they could do with a new Q. Bring it on! Hope it wipes the smile off of Lexus’s ugly face.

BAMF, the only way the new Q can compete with the LS is to focus on budget performance. That being how the G35 is positioned against the 3 series. Then people will buy. But that depends on their crash test ratings.
