Subaru’s long-awaited version of the Toyota FT-86 sports coupe will finally bow at this December’s Tokyo Motor Show, but those waiting for a high-power STI version of the car may be disappointed.

According to Automotive News, Subaru is planning an STI version of the car, but it won’t exactly fit the typical STI mold – while boy racer wheels and spoilers will be part of the package, Subaru officials say turbocharging the car’s 2.0L boxer engine is not in the plans.

Subaru hasn’t commented on the coupe’s power output, but buyers will be able to choose between manual and automatic gearboxes, cutting Subaru’s CVT out of the equation.

Insiders say the two-door will have a longer than normal lifecycle – likely to recoup higher than expected development costs – so expect plenty of variants in the coming years. The STI package will likely be one of the specialty models, so look for it to trail the standard car by a year or two.
