Although the Porsche Panamera won’t make it past its first lifecycle – thanks to Porsche’s new Volkswagen ownership – the four-door sedan is in line for a few variations. A coupe version has been rumored for some time, but it appears as though an open air version is first on the docket.
According to the latest reports out of Germany, Porsche is readying a convertible version of the Panamera sedan. Unlike the current Panamera, the convertible model will shed two-doors, adding a bit of strength into the car’s body. No word if the Panamera convertible will adopt a soft or hard top, but the convertible option will add about $16,000 to the Panamera’s price.
“We have a broad range of 14 derivatives of the 911 that are very successful,” Porsche development chief Wolfgang Duerheimer told Automobilwoche. “So it stands to reason we should diversify the lineup for the Panamera as well.”
It remains to be seen when the Panamera convertible might bow, but the drop top model is likely still a few years out. As such, don’t expect to see the Panamera convertible on dealer lots until 2012 at the very earliest.

This is ridonculous. Why would they create a convertible out of such a large car? This is a large car, isn’t it? Large cars don’t make good convertibles!

I’ve got a name for it … the Panamaira.
And I wouldn’t put too much stock in this whole VW’s going to kill it thing. Their so-called ‘first lifecycle’ for the 911 is in its 4th decade now.

had to do a double take on that picture…. looks surprisingly like a C6 vette in that shot.
I’m not a big fan of convertibles, cars with 4 seats, or porsche’s… so this is a trifecta of things I do not want.

it doesn’t have to be called a 928, but it will be the first 8 cyl front-engine rwd coupe porsche has done since the 928…i want to see some sketches, it’ll be interesting to see how stylists resolve the froggy back end of the panamera in other body styles…

So by removing two doors it becomes a “4 door coupe” that’s actually a coupe…..? This seems pretty irrelevant to me, but I thought the Panamera was a bad idea to begin with.

Big convertibles are freaking awesome. The older you get you realize there’s more to life than just going around a corner fast. Sometimes it’s nice to just put the top down and cruise the boulevard! The sexiest I’ve ever seen a Ferrari was the first time I saw and HEARD a 550 Maranello cruising 10 mph down South Beach.

@LWA No it doesn’t HAVE to be called a 928…but since it’s got the recipe for it…I think they should revive the nameplate! 928’s were really cool cars, so I’d like to see Porsche do a modern interpretation of it. It would certainly have the potential to be a much better looking car then the Panamera!

If VW tries to kill off the Panamera after its first life cycle they may be making a mistake. At least with the Porshe name it can sell at this price point, not so with a VW badge witness the Phaeton. VW’s name has no sex appeal. Expanding the front engine platform makes the best business case and the 928 was a cool ride why not revive it.

When did Porsche start drinking from the Dumb pond?
The Panamera itself is a complete abomination and total and utter joke. Whoever made the decision to design/keep the C-pillar as an unbelievably horrendous and bulbous “thing” should be shot.
Porsche themselves claimed this car to be a 4-door version of the 911 and thus why the design looks like an overgrown 911. But now they’re offering a Convertible version by taking 2 doors off? So what does that yield? Wow, a 911 Cab with a new Interior. At least the hideous rear will be gone!
I remember when Porsche used to make SPORTS CARS. Now they make Cayennes, Panameras and anything else they can mark up excessively w/a Badge. I for one LOVE that VW won the battle and told them to drop the Cayenne and Panamera after this initial run, and RESTORE PORSCHE BACK TO A SPORTS CAR MAKER. At least the people at VW haven’t been drinking out of the same pond.
And by the way, if you want to see an example of how a sports car company can successfully design a 4-door variant, withOUT outright stealing the look of the core car, yet while maintaining the overall brand design theme, look no further than the Lamborghini Estoque.

Yesterday someone made the excellent point that GM moves it’s executives around every few years to effectively make them ‘jacks of all trades, and masters of none.’
Well, doesn’t this also prove true with products that companies produce? My point is, shouldn’t Porsche stick to producing sick rear-wheel drive 2-door sports cars extremely well. Instead of trying to diversify their lineup with mediocre gimmicky junk? Seems to make sense to me, imo………

except for the fact the primary goal of a car company is to make money, not satisfy the wants of porsche fans that have had their sensibilities offended by offering something different…the cayenne has made them a bunch of cash…they saw a potential market and smashed it, which allows them to make more boxsters, 911s, etc…you seem to want to push porsche into making a very small subset of models just to satisfy some emotional sense of purity…
i also don’t think it’s that bad a thing that they used well-known porsche styling queues in the panamera…that’s brand identity…you might as well complain that bmws have similar grills…

This just proves how smart designers really are. Taking this “4 door coupe” and axing two doors and making a 2 door coupe begs the question: wouldn’t that just make it a 911? The Germs are pretty damn stupid

05Z88Path,
I’m talking about the fact that they are turning a “4 door coupe” into a 2 door coupe. The whole part of this car was to add a car to the line up. Not to make it a 2 door. Checkmate.

Checkmate? Are you kidding me?
“The whole part of this car was to add a car to the line up. Not to make it a 2 door.”
So by that reasoning Porsche is not allowed to make any other 2-door models? What about the 924, 944, and 928? All front engined non-inline six powered cars. What about the 914, Boxster, and Cayman? NEWS FLASH…Porsche has produced cars other then their sacred 911. Guess what, they were making great cars BEFORE the 911. Just check out the 356 and 550 Spyder. Checkmate.

KarLoveBoy88,
From what I understand from the article the ONLY reason for dropping 2 doors is because the convertible would need a slightly stiffer/stronger body. So you can still have your backseats but you get the convertible option. Otherwise I would totally agree that making this car into a 2 door totally destroys the entire original point of the car.
Still in my opinion a stupid idea, and I’ve alwats hated the Panamera. But whatever, I don’t care what Porsche does anyways.

To me, Porsche isnt a company known for their styling, its known for engineering.
Although they’ve had their share of hits in the styling departmen, most of their products
have been ho-hum, beating one concept to death.
The powers that be are into things looking “Porsche”, whatever that may be.
The Panamera just suffers from too many Porsche styling cues.
Definitely looks like it was designed by an engineer.

Dear Porsche,
Thanks for giving in to Volkswagen. I really liked the idea of the Panamera ever since I found out about
the design. I adored the unique styling and thought put in to the engineering. It is easy to make a simple little family hatchback, but a true 4 door sport/luxury hatch just bombed me out of the water. Now the converitible is a diffrent matter…Would’nt it defeat the point of the car??I think it would take away form the swooping design But, thats my opinion.
