Report: Saab Sonett a go

07/08/2006, 1:10 PM

By admin

General Motors has approved production of a new Saab Sonett roadster, according to the latest issue of Road and Track. The Audi TT rival will go on sale in two years as a two-seat convertible, and later as a 2+2 coupe, the magazine said. Sonett will feature a wrap-around windscreen and similar styling to the Saab Aero-X Concept. R&T’s report closely matches other recent rumors about the Sonett, which some say will use GM’s Kappa platform. (Pictured is a recent illustration from Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport of how the car could look — see full image here.)

That is one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever seen! I’ll put a deposit down tomorrow. Now just make sure it has a nice interior and high reving turbo I-4 (VGT anyone?) Six speed manual is a must.

Go GM! Go!

The Picture is of the Aero X concept car not the so called “Sonnet”

No, the picture is of a guestimation of what the Sonnet could look like.. not the Aero X. Yes it takes a bunch of styling cues but there are also many differences. And yes, Sonnet is a stupid name, with a lame heritage.

Don’t know about the lame heritage. Since I’m a Swede, I can say the name has a lot of heritage in it and one of the things that always come to mind when talking about Saab as a brand.

Try Audi for heritage… What do they have? Maker of crap cars, bought by Mercedes, then off-loaded to VW and have only made ok cars the last 15 years.

Even if it is based off the Solstice/Sky, that is a lot better than the Saablazer, Saabaru….
I can’t wait for the new Sonett, will be a boost to Saab’s image…now if they can get their sedans back to a unique design (like original 900) with wrap around windshield and other Saab key (past) design ques, I think Saab can be on its way to getting back into the swing of things… Don’t screw this up GM….

the name “sonett” has nothing to do with poetry! sÃ¥ nätt (how nimble) is the first thing the saab-boss said when he saw the first prototyp. sÃ¥ nätt, so nett, sonett.

gsh – how is this a subaru engine? The 2.0 L ecotec is GM all the way. Just because its turboed doesn’t mean its a Subaru.

gsh – Subarus use flat-four engines. This uses the GM Ecotec inline-four. Big difference.

wat is 7 on about. u know nuthin. i think audi is at the benchmark of design and has unrivaled reliability. they help design cars for lambourghini and there nice cars. and if your looking for there heritage go on wikipedia. they created a le lemans car in the 1930’s which had a top speed of 250mph. if thats not enough heritage for you they the most dominant racing team in the world. and as for the cars they basically craeted the passat and the polo. which started of as audis and rebranded by VW later on.

you can’t exactly compare concepts made by gm in the rencent years with the actual cars they release other then the few cars like the saturn sky and the pontiac solstice most other sports cars have been pretty bad like the redesign of the gto which has already haulted production. GM always has problems with there cars anyways.American automakers always have horrible working cars that dont last very long. this car might make it if it keeps with the concept which i doubt gm will keep the main ideals of the concept so yeah the concepts nice but i doubt that the actual car is gonna be any good.

Another GM winner here folks. Just you wait. I have a feeling Audi TT’s, Boxsters, S2000’s, SLK’s are going to be rotting on the lots once this car arrives. Everybody is going to want one of these. As you should! This is a superior piece of engineering

Uh huh. Thanks for the chuckle #24. Saab is about as healthy as a 90 year old smoking 2 packs a day of cigs and lives on Mcdonalds cheeseburgers. Saab should not exist, they’ve been an afterthought at GM for 10 – 15 years. This one car is not a cause for celebration…

I totally like the forms of the car. A very good europian style that will actract many carentusiasts. But I really hate the name, “Sonett a go”?. Saab Aero Roadster, and i would buy it the same minut it gets released!

I like it better than the Aero-X. I had a ‘71 Sonett III and I loved it. I’ve been waiting for a replacement ever since.

I like all the variants (Solstice, Sky and maybe a Chevy Stingray in the future?)… Why not another S for Sonett?

I’d like to have any one of them and probably will eventually. I’m sure this one will have more power than my Sonett’s V-4, but that was a great little car… just hard to find parts! I remember having to wait for about 2 months to get a water pump directly from Sweden!

This one looks like a worthy successor!
