if i were running VW, i would kill this car now and put the money into the next gen GTI. there are few to no examples of really successful stand alone fwd sporty cars and dozens of attempts. none of which have stood the test of time.

5 years from now, the small rwd cars will be making the $28k sirocos look stupid.

This is the same kind of thing that killed the Acura RSX/Integra. The Civic Si became strong enough to make the extra cost of the RSX a deal breaker at a lower cost, along with slow sales of the RSX. The R32 and the Scirocco have the same problem. Both are truly too close to exist well simultaneously and so it will come down to one or the other but not both.

not true, there’s already plenty of ways around a “cross up”. Chauncy described a perfect way around it.

Remember the Corado? I’d like to hold out hope but It may not pan out quite as desired. Remember that strong competitors such as the WRX and the EVO are still out there, and most folks don’t recall how bad-@$$ the Scirocco was and how lame it became over time. A few storng showing in the WRC should help that though. VW typically does well when pushed.

If the Scirocco is built there will not be an R32, otherwise there will be a huge marketing cross-up and sales will suffer for both.

Adding AWD could be the most cost effective way for VW to make this car a success. They already have ALL the parts, not much has to be done. It’s not like they have to build an AWD sysytem from scratch.

From there they have 2 options: make this cheaper than the R32 or make it more expensive

If they want it to be cheaper they don’t need all the amenities that the R32 provides such as: “A lush leather interior ” ” a truly luxurious feel” “supremely comfortable leather sport seats, padded leather door panels, soft materials wherever your elbows touch, and a plush finish overall. Conveniences such as automatic climate control, a sophisticated sound system, and bixenon headlights ”

or if they want it to be a price point higher than the R32 they could include all that stuff…

I think either way it could be good for VW, but I hope they go for the cheaper route.

An AWD coupe would be awesome, but I think it’s too late in the game.

AWD would be a nice touch, and set it apart from the GTI. It would be a nice move, but not cost effective. Adding AWD to this ride would bring it’s price tag inline with R32.
