Report: Toyota makes major changes to Lexus LF-A

05/06/2006, 1:46 PM

By admin

Toyota has decided to make major changes to its Lexus LF-A concept in order to make it the “most luxurious, best handling and safest supercar ever,” reports AutoExpress magazine. According to the report, Lexus has decided to ditch the aluminum body for a carbon fiber one. Furthermore, the company has upped the V10 engine’s displacement from 4.8 liters to 5.0, offering 500 horsepower and a top speed in excess of 200 mph. The car will weigh in around 2,600 pounds, making for some impressive acceleration times — not to mention impressive handling. LF-A will reportedly make its official debut as the pace car at next year’s Japanese Grand Prix — an F1 event that coincides with the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

Wow, only 2600 lbs? That thing is really going to fly and should handle sharply. But I bet all that CF for weight reduction is going to up the price a whole lot.

Sorry, but no decent person would pay that much for a friggin’ Toyota with a big ‘L’ on it.

You might just find yourself wrong Anonymous. Considering how everyone has Ferraris or Lambos, people will try to distinguish themselves by buying something different. If I had the money I would hate to be “just another guy” with a F430.

Anonymous, that’s like saying people are paying $600k for a Dodge with a tri-star (MB SLR). Your logic is beyond flawed. And look at Lexus’ sales right now — it’s the leading luxury marquee in the states. Either everyone else is in idiot, or you are. I’d say it’s the latter :)

Either way that is the most boring looking “supercar” that has ever been designed. Secondly, the fact that the company included that they want it to be the most luxurious and safest supercar ever built contradicts the spirit of a supercar. They are supposed to be bold and wild. Even the current supercars, like the SLR and the just retired CGT, have strayed away from the true essence of a supercar with their finely finished interiors and lack of brashness. The Ferrari F40, now that was a real supercar.

Well, it is a Lexus so it is assumed to be boring and will probably not be released in this manner for the public to buy. If that ever happens…

Except your comparison doesn’t make any sense. An SLR is in no way even closely related to Dodge.

If they do manage to actually have the thing weigh only 2,600 lbs, and make 500hp, their numbers may make up for the looks area. And at this point, there’s really no sense in bashing Toyotas. Toyota as a company screws up a lot less on the engineering front than most American companies.

um… only 500 horses? that gives it like 100 horses per liter…
nothing compared to other f1-inspired supercars… slr has 617 horses (112 per liter)… however its more expensive, heavier, and better looking.
the enzo has 650 horsepower (108 per liter) and is only 400 pounds heavier than the lexus. but its well out of that pricerange.
looking at how toyota plans to price this, they want it to compete with the zo6, v8 vantage, and 911. the lexus has the price and performance for this category, but it doesnt have the looks and brand recognition of these cars, and thats important in this segment.

#7, “…most boring looking “supercarâ€? that has ever been designed … most luxurious and safest supercar ever built contradicts the spirit of a supercar”

Sounds good. So your definition of a “super car” has already been filled by many models already on the market.
Which is the same way the “sports” definition of “luxury cars” has already been filled by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi competing against each other, while Lexus alone picks up huge unclaimed market share on the other definition of a “luxury car”.. a car with luxuries and comfort.

So Lexus goes off to build a “super car” that is less edgy looking, and more “luxurious”, and “safe”. Sounds like the remaining 40% of the US population’s definition of a great car, which is a piece of pie totally unclaimed by any other manufacturer.

manny, slr is supercharged. Well, enzo is enzo ;) . I am pretty sure they could rank up the specific power output, but then it would rank up the price and rank up the reliability problems as well. Still, 100bhp per liter is no mean feat.

Are you guys kidding? This is definately sick. And don’t even try to give me that “it only has 100hp per liter and that isn’t plenty” crap. How ridiculous of you to say “the enzo has 108hp and its only 400lbs heavier.” That just shows that this is a better hp to weight ratio! And dont try to say its just a “Toyota with a big L on it,” because I dont recall seeing any cars like this with the Toyota emblem on it either. This is definately a Lexus supercar, and it is definately pretty freakin super. You wouldn’t take this car? You’re crazy. It looks ridiculously sweet. If this was some other car companies design, you would say it was awesome. However, you see “Lexus” and you just assume boring. Until you drive it, I dont think you have any right to talk. I cant imagine its NOT an amazing car to drive. Go ahead, prove me wrong.

Wow. That is such talk. Most luxurious and best handling dont go together. 2600lb with a V10? Sure. With everything they are saying its going to be about 3500 lb minimum.

I disagree with most of the comments made here – mainly because they are either: a.) shallow-minded or b.) didn’t read the article properly.

Now, Lexus want to make the most luxurious SUPERCAR ever. Now, seeing as we’re talking about supercars, the title of being the most luxurious will not be hard to accomplish. Throw a bit of leather around, an LCD screen here and there and wa-lah! there you have it – the most luxurious supercar ever.

Best handling huh? While I doubt it’s going to happen, I’m not completely writing them off. From spyshots, it’s obvious to see it’s been extensively tested at world-famous race tracks, such as the fearsome Nurburgring Nordschliefe. And we all know that the majority of the cars developed there turn out brilliantly. (I only have to direct you towards the V8 Vantage and various BMW’s to prove my point). So y’know, it’s not going to be sooo far out of reach.

It’ll be boring because it’s a Lexus? What poppy-****. Deadset, that’s just ignorant. The IS350 is a brilliant drive and a genuinely exciting car, both to look at and drive. If that’s not proof, I fail to see what is. Sure, Lexus do make luxury cars, but that hardly means they’ll be boring.

And the weight issue. Oh boy. 1100-odd kilograms seems a bit optimistic, but I don’t doubt they could get the car down to 1250kg at the maximum. Claims of over 1500kg is just plain insulting to the boffins in Japan. Liberal use of carbon fibre and lightweight materials for the suspension and the engine will get it down to the quoted weight. Another important thing to remember is that the LF-A is nowhere near as large or wide as other supercars such as the Zonda or the Enzo, which will mean it already has an advantage.

And manny, stop talking such BS. The S2K’s engine has a higher hp/litre ratio than the Enzo – does that mean it’s better than the Enzo? Of course not. It doesn’t matter how much hp/litre it produces. It’s the WAY it produces it that makes all the difference.

Whats the difference between spending that much for a Toyota or a Ferrari? Either way it’s money down the drain for a piece of jewelry. These things aren’t made to be anything else.

2600lbs is possible, if it is an exceedingly small car. The Saleen S7 weighs in at 2950 lbs, but it has a huge heavy ass 7.0L motor with all the plumbing for twin turbos, etc. But, I can’t imagine the vehicle will very spacious given the weight constraints imposed by 2600lbs and a 5L V10.

That said, its still gonna get stomped by the Saleen. And with liberal use of carbon fibre, its not gonna be the value the NSX was when it was introduced. Well, its always good to see one more company pushing the envelope, but I don’t think you’re gonna see Ferrari, Porsche, Aston, or M- aficionados suddenly defecting to mingle amongst the real estate agents at the Lexus dealership.

This is even less disconcerting than Toyota’s F1 effort (which is pretty pathetic from a results standpoint). Yes, they’ll throw tons of money at it but they just don’t have any idea what makes a driver’s car. It’ll still have enough electro-nannies that you can’t turn off that it will be completely worthless on the track and not a serious road car for any actual driving enthusiast. Toyota doesn’t even know how to make a sportscar much less a supercar, just look at their current lineup. Yawn. Next.
