Report: Toyota may add five North American plants

01/12/2007, 1:12 PM

By admin

Toyota may build as many as five assembly plants in North America over the next ten years, according to a report by Bloomberg News. Citing sources familiar with the plans, the news organization said Toyota was considering the move to meet growing demand and counteract political backlash over imports from Japan.

The company would build at least one factory in the southeastern United States, and one in Mexico, the sources said.

An additional five plants would give the Japanese automaker roughly the same number of facilities as Ford, which is currently closing a number of plants. Five factories would create around 10,000 jobs, Bloomberg said.

Toyota will never be an American company until the money comes to America. So stop saying their American just because they have plants here and employ americans. That’s like saying illigal imigrants are americans.

Tell that to my neighbor who’s brand new Camry choked up its third transmission and his Corolla caught fire due to a faulty wiper motor. He told me wishes he had bought GM like I do so that he wouldn’t have to deal with anymore Toyota bull****.

You’d be surprised by the amount of car fires I see on the road. Mostly Toyotas, BMW’s, Mazdas and Fords. Every now and then I come across a few Audi’s and VW’s but I rarely see those brands because nobody really buys them. Back in Michigan, where I am from, import cars that have caught fire are usually intentional from either vandals or disgruntled owners who just want the insurance money so they can go buy one of the new GM offereings. You’d be amazed the amount of new Saturn Auras, Pontiac G6’s, Impalas, Lucernes, Lacrosses and 900 utes have cropped up around my area. They are everywhere. Can’t say the same for Toyotas.

And of course my 91 S10 went up in flames, but that was my fault for welding with out a fire extinguisher. I miss that truck, had over 175k miles with no problems other than rust, 2.8L with a 5 speed.

Like I said, imports are a dying breed here and across Michigan. I gave examples of this theory above. People are fed up with low quality, unreliable cheapass pieces of ****. They want real cars, and GM is going to give it to them. GM reigns at the top of JD powers studys for years now, Buick and Cadillac always on top, Pontiac, Chevy and GMC follow closely behind. Where those precious imports? At the bottom of course.

Now Toyota is going to throw more money into this country? This reeks of desperation on their part. They can’t even survive selling the **** that they build now, how are they going to be when they have 5 more plants worth?

01/12, 2:36 PM

Look around you guys, the wave known as “The American Revolution” is starting to hit areas across the country. Footholds that imports have had in the NorthEast, the Southest, DC, California, Northwest are all crumbling. There are many dealers who are going out of business because they can’t sell the product. Go to places like Wayne county, Macomb, Kent, Oakland in Michigan and import dealers are dropping like flies there, being replaced by gorgeous new GM dealers. I tell you the foot traffic in those places have grown 10 fold, before the new GM dealers came in, they were ghost towns.

Even here in SanDiego, where I am staying on business, there is a dealer across the street that has rows and rows of Camrys, RAVs, Highlanders and Corollas. Nobody is even looking at them because nobody cares about them anymore. The only traffic coming in and out of the dealership has been flatbed trucks dropping off broken down cars. I can count 3 dead Camrys sitting on the backs of the dealerships flatbeds.

The tide is turning and Toyota is going to get sucked under by the tidal wave that is The American Revolution. Nobody is safe. Count on it.

They also have these tags on the windshields of all the cars that are marked $$$$ off. The whole front row of Tundras are $15,000 off + 0% financing. Seems like they are giving them away. Must be trying to dump the remaining inventory before they go under.

They assemble them here, don’t confuse that with building them. 75% or more of parts used on Japanese vehicle assembled here are from parts manufactured in Japan/Korea/China or other 3rd world contries. This is part of the monetary loophole that adds to the trade deficit with the US.

I see is re-investing nearly 1 billion dollars in 8 Michigan plants for engine, transmission, stamping and assembly to take them to the next level of flexible manufacturing.

It’s not a good thing in the long term. Toyota is huge.

What blows my mind is how much people harp on their superfantasticfradulisticexpialadojous quality…. and yet their cars are often the most boring garbage ever produced. AND WE PAY THROUGH THE NOSE FOR IT.

Toyota does have good quality, fit and finish and ergonomics….. oh yes. All good.

It’s just that the cars aren’t inspiring, don’t look nice, with no actual sports trim levels, no manual transmissions on the “sport” versions, no rear wheel drive, no lightweight cars that aren’t gas misers….

So it’s these kinds of cars that these new factories will produce. That and a few million trucks.

I find it amazing people don’t demand more interesting cars buy not buying what amounts to high quality garbage.

And no, I don’t recommend buying GM over a Toyota. They’ve got their own problems and front wheel drive religion to axe in coming years.

Chevy sells cars in europe now but they are just rebaged daewoos so much for an american car ehy. and cadilac can barely sell a car in europe. as for ford usa well they can sell a couple of mustangs in europe and thats about it. and its not only europe go to japan and see how many brandnew american cars u can find i garantie its 0. the only export market were american cars do well is china and thats cause they have about as much taste as tofu. its sad mr gm that u are too ignorant and aparently full of yourself to admit you have said some dumb things.

“Toyota will never be an American company until the money comes to America.”

Translation: Until the money goes to American execs and shareholders, the very same that are fueling the cycle of ****ty American cars because all they give a **** about is making a quick buck in the short run. American workers can build just as good cars (Toyota’s proven that), but it’s the leadership that sucks ass. You think their business models are the same? Try reading the Toyota Way. It’s not nearly the same. As one small example, grunt workers at a Toyota factory have far more say than a comparable “domestic” factory.

That’s not entirely true bun_a_gm. The Toyota plant in Cambridge Ontario produces the Corolla, Matrix and RX350 and 400h, and it has consistently ranked as high or higher than it’s counterparts in Japan. Same for Honda’s plant in Alliston Ontario. And you’ll notice in the JD Power survey that even the GM plants that rank high are located in Canada.

Well for whatever its worth, Toyota gaining even more US manufacturing won’t do anything to change their lackluster range of cars. While a Toyota is infinitely better on quality then General Motors, they are the only domestic manufacturer trying to make waves with a few bold new sporty products such as the Camaro, Solstice and Sky, Zeta-sedans, Caddy CTS and the mainstay evolving Corvette Z06.

The state of the car market and its relation to market share has always perplexed me. To me, GM is doing much better because their lineup of cars are becoming less boring than they used to be.

Alternatively, Toyota makes a lot of very boring cars that don’t handle very well because they have very soft suspensions and FWD. Amazingly, people seem to like this more and while I prefer superior build quality myself I still can’t justify buying a more well built vehicle that does less for the driver than a comparatively exciting product that has some reliability and quality issues.

I just don’t understand why General Motors got the message that people want more exciting products and loses money and yet Toyota flatly ignores those requests and keeps reaping profits and builds more factories!

Amazing.

btw: What about the Honda CR-V front end? Just our luck, they run forever so we get to look at ‘em drive by…at least it looks good from other angles.
