Report: Toyota to launch larger Prius model next year

11/13/2009, 6:14 PM

By Drew Johnson

Toyota’s long-rumored larger Prius model will finally hit the market next year, a new report finds. Reports of larger Prius model have been circling the internet rumor mill since 2007.

According to Japan’s Yomiuri newspaper, Toyota will launch a larger Prius model by the end of next year. It remains unclear exactly what body type the bigger model will employ, but a wagon or crossover body shell is expected.

The new Prius model will use lithium-ion batteries, making it the first Toyota vehicle to feature the more powerful battery technology. Toyota’s current hybrid offerings – including the all-new Prius – use nickel-metal hydride batteries.

The new model is expected to first launch in the Japanese market with a price tag of about $22,000. Although not confirmed, U.S. sales seem likely due to the Prius’ popularity in the States. The new Prius model could also mark the start of Toyota’s Prius sub-brand.

Will they offer a 4-door coupe or a 2-door sedan? The last thing we need is another car model to choose from. How about making what they already have better? Or does that make too much sense?…..

since the prius sells like mad, this actually makes sense for them…you may be overwhelmed by the extensive number of prius models currently available (1) but i doubt everybody will be so affected ;)

Since the Volt (your purchase of which will soon be mandated by Congress) is basically getting the same mileage as a Civic the enviromaggots will need something equally stupid, ugly, and useless to tool around in and publically declare their idiocy, so Toyota is smart to fill their pathetic needs.

Bosley: Yes, there was a rumor that Toyota is planning a 2-door Prius, this would be awesome. I am tired of 4-doors only getting the hybrids. Now that Honda’s upcoming CR-Z is coming, you can be even more assured that Toyota will want a piece of the 2-door hybrid market. I can’t wait. Google for more info on “Toyota Prius Coupe”

What else do you want from one car?

I thought you have stupid, ugly and useless covered?
Maybe you need to hit the gym?

Making a bigger Prius makes less sense than a smaller one
As the CR-Z is coming out to attack Prius from below

A 2500 lb Prius should approach 60MPG, with Nickel-batteries
Who knows how far they can go with Lithium

I doubt I’m the first Toyotaphile to consider these possibilities
The future’s so bright

Why not make the existing Prius drive more like a car than a ox cart? The thing needs better interior, better handling response. If people want a bigger Prius, they would buy a Camry Hybrid.

Hell yea. What a great effort for a green company. Toyota cares more about the environment than garbage motors and the pos volt. I’m sure that ugly pos volt will be recalled within weeks of its release.

Just a few months ago we were discussing about Toyota’s comments that GM was making a mistake bringing Li-ion batteries into production because they were dangerous. Now they have them in their vehicles. Many here made havoc on GM because they were using Li-Ion in the Volt.

Anybody remember that?

“Toyota is sticking with proven NiMH tech. Why? Cost is evidently the main factor. Li-Ion is more expensive than NiMH. But Toyota and its main battery partner, Panasonic, seem to have been struggling with advanced Li-Ion designs for a while. Back in 2007, Toyota indicated that new Priuses would continue to use NiMH, because the Li-Pack it was working with were raising safety concerns. They were catching on fire, for example. Not something you want in a vehicle that’s also carrying around a dozen gallons of highly flammable fuel.”

Still, the People’s Thread comment was meant to be funny, not angry.

Why is toyota making a bigger prius? Well because prius is the only good thing at toyota today. The fly by wire, zip ties, and rusty pickups issues are not helping toyota. Go drive a new corolla or camry and give a honest opinion and you will say this is piece of crap. The interiors are cheaply made with cheap plastics. Vents and piece do not fit like they used too. Its like the gm products of the mid 1990’s. This is why toyota is building a bigger prius, they have nothing else.

I think the “bigger” Prius should be a proper station wagon, since there are no real Corolla or Camry wagon successors. Adding a Priusized CUV would be redundant because there’s already the Highlander Hybrid, and it would be stupid to add yet another Rav-4 or Venza sized vehicle with a different name (”Prius X”, anyone?)
