6ix: oh yes, no doubt about that. The unions have had a major hand in f*cking up the most for the Domestics. Hopefully with the new measures in place like equal pay as the imports, things will improve dramatically.

"Many of us will suffer for their mistakes, but they did it to us and themselves."

Care to explain that vague statement? How are the billions spent on GM different from the trillions we spend on other stuff? How are we going to "suffer" for this?

LLL3:

CAn you read? Apparently you cannot. I never said this was going to be cheap- I said that taxpayer money was going to be spent either way. GM's financial position was based on contracts and decisions made years ago- few of them were made under Wagoner. In fact, he had done more to undo the damage of the past than any of his predecessors. This notion that they can't come back without the debts of the past is lunacy at its finest. The entire point of going bankrupt is to quickly shed liabilities that have been dragging down their bottom line for years. It can work but it will cost taxpayers billions. Guess what? Liquidaton was going to cost taxpayers billions as the PBGC absorbed pensions it couldnt handled and hundreds of thousands lost jobs. All that stuff doesn't come free. On top of that you can rest assured the Feds would have forked over billions to Michigan and other midwestern states that would have been reeling from the collapse of GM, Chrysler, Ford and hundreds of suppliers. In case you forgot (which you did) ford came to DC last year to make it clear that the failure of GM would lead to the failure of suppliers which would've led to potential failure of Ford. All of this stuff is connected which is why Bush decided to approved the $17B in December.

AS for GM lving on borrowed time: No jackass that is incorrect. They had negotiated huge concessions from the union and most experts felt that 2010 was the year when they would start to turn around permanently. Once they shed the retirees healthcare costs and got the low wage workers their costs per vehicle would've decreased substantially. That entire plan was based on sales remaining relatively steady. Once overall sales fell by 35% last fall all bets were off.

If could chose between spending $600B on Iraq and $40B to help GM survive this recession I would go with GM every time. Dont lecture me about wasted taxpayer dollars when we have poured $600B+ into Iraq with NO return on investment whatsoever.

I do not get it. How can they say that the money is forgiven? The government is getting "stock/equity" for the money.

The plan is to sell the stock back on the market in two years. (Both UAW and Government)

GM should have been wiser with the money they were given. Now they sacrifice their status as a private company practicing capitalism to alleviate their debt to the Government. Many of us will suffer for their mistakes, but they did it to us and themselves.

icedog....you have some valid points. But, the country's businesses do NOT rely on GM products in the same way as they rely on intel's products. Although the loss of GM will have a HUGE impact on our economy, they simply can't go on the way they have been. They just don't have a competitive product and keeping them around "just because" is against everything our country stands for.

Again, it's the Union's fault.

Chris C.: hold your horses. If GM goes down, we all go down. GM must, I repeat, MUST survive, because hundreds of thousands of businesses directly or indirectly depend on them. It's just as if Intel one day has to halt chip production because of bankruptcy problems. Hint: they can't. The entire nation and beyond relies on Intel's chips, so it ain't gonna happen. Some companies just can't die, ever, for goodness' sake.

Since it's our money being spent on GM because they were incapable to manage themselves correctly throughout the years, I think every US citizen/permanent resident should receive a brand new 2010 Camaro V6 fully loaded. That would bring people back on GM's side, and repay the debt they still owe us.

This is it guys, the markets self-regulate so well, and government intervention is amazing and should be celebrated. WTF, seriously, the whole world has become a big, fuming, mismanaged pile of donkey crap...

Big freakin' deal.

So what if the Gov't owns this POS company for awhile? Hell, private industry is a failure; let's see what the Gov't can do with this failing monster.

Private industry has failed us over and over. You Glenn Beck/Limbaugh fans don't realize the Gov't has bailed all of us out over and over again.

At least we can keep the Corvette going. The do-nothing Herbert Hoover Repuglicans would just let everything fail around us but give us a tax cut (worthless if you have no income).

GM is crap and so is Chrysler. I'm pissed that my tax dollars are paying their way into bankruptcy, all because of horrible products made by piss-poor horrible employees (Union workers.) They suck, and drove the two companies into oblivion.

This is such B.S. Hey US Gov, can you loan me $1Bill and then let me not pay it back? I really need it to pay my bills. I don't think I will be buying another GM car anytime soon, or may ever again. Gotta love corporate America and this country.

Corporatocracy is great. Can't wait until it's out in the open.. People are gonna be like, "wtf happened, where were the signs! WHY DIDN'T THEY TELL US?!!?!?"

The truth is there for the people that really wanna look for it. But most of you obviously don't. The reasons for all these problems are fundamental, it's not just a couple people mismanaging a couple major companies. It's humanities mismanagement of itself.

there aren't too many moves the government can make here...when the previous administration decided to put GM and Chrysler on government life support, that removed the option of letting these companies implode naturally...

i think that decision was wise...restructuring is a better solution than calling it quits totally...in the short term, jobs are saved at a time when saving jobs is important, in the long term a leaner and more profitable company can result...getting there isn't pretty, though...

once you accept that the government won't allow these companies to die, there are only a few paths you can take...personally, i'm not a fan of selling out to a foreign car company...while i'm surprised that the 15 billion, or whatever the real number is, will be "forgiven", i'm not surprised the government will have to take control...

i also don't think the government is taking permanent control...and when i'm proven right you paranoid conspiracy guys owe me beers!

lets just keep this in perspective...the DoD budget is over 500 billion this year alone (war budget not included)...you could float nearly 20 GMs with that kinda scratch...i think folks get uptight over the word "control", thinking suddenly uncle sam is going to peering up at you when you flip the lid on your crapper when you get home...although i get the feeling some of you would welcome that opportunity ;P

Here is why GM is doomed now: 90% of the obamatards who voted in this crapstain will never consider an american car to begin with, and the remainder of the country who did not vote for this crapstain but which has a favorable opinion of american cars will now never buy a GM vehicle because they rightfully dont trust the government to do a damn thing right. They'll buy Fords.

Bye bye GM. Hard to believe the even Chrysler will outlast GM but it will.

@sj79, you are clueless as GM was already dead, and you just don't get it. Instead you are happy parading around a dead corpse until the stench overwhelms you. GM had been living on borrowed time for far too long. You also don't get that the US taxpayer was under no obligation whatsoever to bailout GM—you can't bailout the dead! Anyone hoping GM will survive and comeback stronger is underwater looking upwards to the surface as the Titanic sank. Borat is absolutely correct...we have not seen nor heard nor felt in our wallets the end of this long and sorted fiasco.

sj79, there is no way GM could survive any bankruptcy proceedings under US laws. It would be liquidated and remains would be sold to highest bidder, satisfying creditors (pennies on a dollar, but creditors did not get much more anyway). The only reason we are having this fake proceedings to hand over GM to UAW and continue that farce with US financing. 15.4 billions is not end of all. We will be forced to pay much more. This show will continue either till 2010 or 2012, but it will end with next election cycle. There will be no GM as we know it today: formula failed and US government does not know how to run auto company any more then Putz and Wagoner and that is not saying much. It will be messy expensive and just prolongs for 3 years UAW grip on treasury dollars. Then they will face the music. But this delay will cost us over 100 billion dollars.

"@sj79, “Why are people complaining? All you people wanted Chapter 11- you got it.” Yes, but we wanted it from the onset versus now as those who have actually dealt with large bankruptcies know how it works. "

You are clueless. If GM had declared chapter 11 6 months ago the results woult have been liquidation. Before last fall GM wouldnt even have considered chapter 11 based on sales and revenues. After the banking crisis unfolded financing for Chapter 11 was unavailble from anyone but the government. LAst fall when idiots from the GOP were pushing for bankruptcy the possibility of privately financed DIP was already nonexistent. Banks would NEVER lend GM money for DIP financing under current conditions. The government was always the only choice and those asking for GM to go bankrupt before Bush gave them $13B already knew that which made their "concerns" about saving taxpayer money nothing more than posturing.

The government has lined everything up in advance of Chapter 11 in order to make the process faster and cheaper for taxpayers. Thats been the plan all along. Going into Chap 11 uncontrolled would have been a disaster and the government would've had to step in to save what was left of GM in a very drawn out and messy process. Like I said, this is what you wanted and you got it. Accept it. Wagoner and others knew that Chapter 11 was going to be messy and said GM should restructure out of court but the "experts" kept beating the Chapter 11 drum suggesting it would "save" taxpayers money. When GM submitted a report to congress in February they laid out costs to US taxpayers if they went bankrput and the sum was substantial. Everyone ignored that and said "hey, we can fix GM in 2 months if we force them into court" and that's what happened. GM likely could have survived with $30b-$40B outside of bankruptcy and lived to pay all the money back without government ownership. The ATF didnt support that theory and here we are. This process will cost the government as much as GM's February out of court proposal.

So GM files chapter 11, and the government runs things for a while.
I don't think the government will run anything. I for see this GM files chapter 11, the goverment will say they are now going to run things and in a few months they will say GM has everything worked out up to government standards and will give them there company back. GM comes out clean and in control of there company.

@sj79, "Why are people complaining? All you people wanted Chapter 11- you got it." Yes, but we wanted it from the onset versus now as those who have actually dealt with large bankruptcies know how it works. GM might have stood a chance of recovering had they declared bankruptcy to begin with. The American public probably would have had a lot more sympathy and compassion for GM had they declared bankruptcy from the beginning. I do not now nor have I ever hated the unions (I am for the unions and have never wavered on my stance)—I loathe their poor management as much as I loathe GM's top executive management as they are the ones responsible. Period. People should now be watching the legal bills as they will be shocked at how much the lawyers will make on this one—all at US taxpayers expense!

This has averted a far bigger disaster had the industry gone bankrupt through normal market forces. Similarly, the banking industry averted a disaster an order of magnitude larger with free government money also an order of magnitude larger in sum.

At least these clowns didn't trigger anything and actually produced something tangible.

Why are people complaining? All you people wanted Chapter 11- you got it. If you hate the UAW you wanted to see GM go into bankruptcy. Now they will. Its been known for 6 months that the government would have to fund them in Chapter 11 and ensure they emerge. You got what you asked for.

I was afraid Barny Frank would become the New CEO of General Motors and I might be right!?((^&$%@

Well folks... it's official. GM = Government Motors.

I'm going to go ahead and pre-order a 2011 Chevrolet Obama... or maybe I should wait for the 2012 Buick Pelosi.

The US government has stepped in and bought bad assets before. They'll break GM apart and sell off the pieces that are worthwhile lets just hope the unions go away too.

We are heading down the same path USSR did before their economy and government collapsed. Gov't forces industry to keep building stuff to keep people working, but nobody is buying the stuff!

This is scary, time to invest is guns and whiskey.

This surprises? This has been the plan from the begining! Chrysler was supposed to be there too but the damn Itallians mucked it up, evidenced by the 55% UAW ownership which paralells truck manufacturing (good chrysler) in Chrysler. But watch, something will happen to the Fiat deal, Obama Mototrs will not be denied.
