Audi ’s topless R8 Spyder made its official debut at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but came sporting just a single engine choice – Audi’s 5.2L V10. However, another powertrain will soon join the R8 Spyder range, offering a lower priced convertible model.
In order to make the R8 Spyder a bit more obtainable, Audi will add its 4.2L V8 engine to the range. Set to wear the Audi R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI nameplate – following the format already laid out by the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI – the eight-cylinder drop top is set to hit the market by early 2011.
Like its fixed-roof counterpart, the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI will come packing 420 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Buyers will be able to choose between Audi ’s R tronic semi-automatic and a conventional six-speed manual.
Pricing for the R8 Spyder 4.2 FSI has yet to be announced, but the eight-cylinder version of the convertible is expected to shave about $30,000 from the cost of the V10 Spyder, leaving a best-guess price at about $130,000. The V8-powered R8 coupe lists from about $114,000.
