Yeah need more oil for volkswagen, that fool bad mouthing imports obviously has never heard of government subsidies. If it weren’t for the feds GM would be laying in the graveyard. I’ll tell you what’s unamerican is telling others what to do and buy. Oh and don’t forget socialist style corporate bailouts. But that’s OK, before you know it VW will be the largest auto manufactuer in the world. I don’t care what’s faster on the track because most people ain’t at the track on the weekend. I look at the whole package. Who wants to argue resell value with me and my fellow dubbers. Maybe we can talk about how the cobalts interior looks and feels like it was made by a toy company. There’s a reason VW’s cost more, they are of a better quality. In the end the point is, people like what they like. Don’t try telling me I don’t love my country cause i drive a european car. I’ve forgotten more about this country and it’s founding principles than most people know. Have a nice day now.

this is so dumb. the cobalt is a good car for the money and the gti-r is absurdly hot. I wouldnt buy a cobalt just because i happen to like the gti-r better. But that doesnt mean that all those tests are bullshit, facts are facts lol you really cant dispute that. If someone likes the cobalt and buys one and spends less money for comparable performance because thats what they want then who cares lol? The Cobalt SS’s engine actually won awards. It will last closer to 200,000 miles.
The only reason I said it was sexy is because you said the GTI was sexy. The GTI is a WIFES HATCHBACK. The Cobalt SS is a COUPE. At least as sexy as a hatchback.

So a Cobalt looks as good as a GTI, is as reliable, outperforms it in every aspect, is cheaper, and is more fuel efficient. What is wrong with that? Nothing.

was a lame 2007 supercharged version….
id much rather just have a nissan versa, honda fit, ford focus, or basically anything comparable…

dude, yes for a chevy, they are cool… and if my ONLY choice was a chevy, id rock one, with really dark tinted windows…

but hte truth is, this is a free market… and the SS is STILL a COBALT…. i won’t prejudge the cruze…

lets see when cruze SS hits the ground… you might have something there…

What you think the Cobalt looks like or where it falls on the coolness scale is your personal opinion (And practical based on what?), I already said I’m not a huge Cobalt fan. That’s cause I’m not a fan of the turbo-4 boy toy scene. You seem very worried about what other people think of you, so go ahead and buy a GTI-R and convince yourself that you’re better than other people if that’s what works for you.

And I can’t wait to test drive a Focus RS! The only compact turbo’d car I’d buy right now.

like i said above, who cares !?

but the car is a turd compared to anything else even with 63 less horsepower…. it still looks like a cheap, basic mode of transportation at the end of the day, more so than anything comparable…

I would love to drive one on a track… tune it, beat the shit out of it… sure…

but the bottom line is, i, like many people, would never BUY one because of the principles mentioned above…

btw when was the last time you actually looked at a coalbalt SS ?? it likes worse than the SRT-4 neon (forget the caliber) did when compared with any of the competition….

again the WRX, STi, Ralliart, EVO, GTI-R… etc are more practical and have more potential with awd…..

They are completely above the league of the Coalball SS, but if you love it so much, go buy one, so i can laugh when i see you driving it… awww… how cute… he thinks its a good car because its fast… poor guy…

Thank you 2WheeledSpeed, and you are correct Stix. Both the GTI and Cobalt are good looking in their own way and people will have their own opinion.
And yes the Cobalt is ending BUT it is being replaced by the Cruze. Perhaps a Cruze SS with more performance is on the way. The Cruze ups the Cobalt in MPG (45mpg vs 37mpg, and the 37mpg is already higher than the competition) and the interior has been totally redone to rid the “plasticy” feel.

You’re not going to convince Cobalt owners that the Golf is a good car, just like how Golf owners will not be convinced that the Cobalt is also a good car. As far as I’m concerned, neither cars are perfect, and the Cobalt will never be able to completely annihilate the Golf in sales alone.

People have different reasons why they prefer the GTI over whatever else the competition is offering at the moment. Just telling GTI owners that the Cobalt SS will annihilate their car in every single aspect possible doesn’t mean sh1t due to the fact that the Cobalt will be beaten someday by yet another competitor, until that other competitor’s car gets beaten as well, and vice versa. It’s a pointless dick measuring contest.

Another thing, hasn’t GM announced that they’re eliminating the Cobalt from their lineup as soon as December 2009? Talk about a 5 year lifespan.

Thank you for not even pretending to do your research… The Cobalt came in 6 seconds before the WRX STI on the VIR track. And you’re going to pull this BS “Oh well if you upped the power and added suspension mods it couldn’t repeat that…”? Really? It already comes with 260 horses, I doubt modding it to 320ish would totally destroy it’s ability to handle a track.

I can present real results from real tests done by reputable auto publications and you talk about your opinions of the unverifiable performance of aftermarket modded cars… Cute… You read too many tuner mags…

And can’t you also argue that ANY upgraded/performance version of a regular car is taking the fun (potential) out of the car for tuners? That’s stupid, not every can or wants to mod their own car to go fast and IF a tuner wanted to build a Cobalt from the ground up all he would have to do is buy a base Cobalt… You’re an idiot…

You are so biased it is ridiculous. And look at how you talk. How mature is that? Not at all. Be mature and look at the facts. Against all the cars it was tested against it outhandled them. Skidpad, slalom, and racetrack. It destroys the GTI in ALL performance aspects. Plus it gets better fuel economy and is 2 grand cheaper. Bet a clue. And while the GTI does look good I prefer a coupe look and the cobalt provides that. And when I built them I did so with equal equipment. Or here, without checking anything the GTI is $23,930 and the Cobalt SS is $22,845. The only thing before that I checked on the GTI that I didn’t on the Cobalt is rims because the stock GTI rims are ugly.

LOOK AT THE FACTS.
Cobalt is cheaper, faster and more economical. GTI is, um, well…Nicer looking seats. And then tack on $10k for the GTI-R to match Cobalt SS speeds. No thank you, Cobalt for me.

and if you read my comments correctly, i said if it were enhanced with significant engine(325+wheel HP)
/suspension modifications, it most definitely couldn’t hang with anything better than a MS3, Civic Si, GTI(NOT-R), SRT-4 (caliber or neon, but both are now dead) etc….

FORGET that coalball SS thing hanging with any worked GTI-R, WRX, WRX STI, Ralliart (08+), EVO, Audi , any bmw, any anything AWD or RWD

again i was saying if these were all modified equally (power and suspension, brakes), the SS would not hang

Stock, yes, maybe it can beat the competition, but this is more equivalent to, IMO to a Civic EX, Mazda 3, or that were aftermarket modified with a turbo, nice suspension and brakes, than any of these better, IMO, base platforms for tuners to work on…. in other words, chevy has taken it apon themselves to modify their own cobalt, not really develeoped an improved base model for aftermarket companies to improve on. They have taken a lot of the fun (potential) out of it….

Have you ever actually sat inside or driven a Cobalt SS nickkop? It isn’t actually as horrible as you make it out to be. And if you bothered to go look at Road and Track or Motortrends comparisons that include the Cobalt SS you would see that it CAN hang with both it’s FWD and AWD counterparts, and not just in a straight line.

OR you could go to Car and Driver and see how the Cobalt SS killed the Mugen Si, the Evolution MR, BMW 135i, Lexus IS F, Honda S2000 CR, Lotus Elise SC, Infiniti G37 coupe, and Subaru Impreza WRX STI (Among others) at the 4.2 mile Virginia International Raceway.

The cobalt doesn’t have the history that the GTI does. I am not saying this is for everyone, but its for the VW enthusiast. And that is what the VW .:R cars are for, not for the masses. If it was for the masses, they would slap the K04 turbo on the GTI and have it have similar power/tq as the cobalt, look better, have a nicer interior, and can have it cost relatively the same (K04 is as cheap as the K03 turbo, S3 FSI injectors and FSI injectors are relatively similarly priced, rods and pistons are slightly different to handle more power…etc).

BIG-KC, one more downfall of the GTI though…its getting fat, weight increases over the years have killed its “hot hatch” feel. I love mine though, just wanted to add to your scoring though

I built a Cobalt SS and a GTI as identical as I could. The GTI cost $25,680 vs the Cobalt at $23,655. The GTI is $2,025 more.

The bottom line. The Cobalt will be as comfy as the GTI-R. The Cobalt will be FASTER than the GTI-R. The Cobalt will get better fuel economy. The GTI-R will have a nicer interior. The Cobalt will cost $10,000 less.

Cobalt SS:3, GTI-R:1

The Cobalt SS is better for less.

furthermore, the fwd coalball SS is less practical with front wheel drive, and even more so if it were tuned – if engine performance were enhanced- that much power (assuming it does probably have huge engine performance enhancement potential as well) going to only front wheel will struggle to come close to any EVO, WRX, wrx STi, or GTI-R with similar power output around any real world track with nice tight curves

BIGKC, he said the EVO 10 is faster than the GTI-R in a straight line, and said nothing about around a good track (not a dragstrip) or a full comparison, because no one has driven one to compare them…. and 5.5 to 60 is not bad, considering the complete package one will get for 29,000-33000, the slight compromise in outright speed compared with Evo 10 or STI (not handling-performance — and the huge engine tuning / performance enhancement potential not even being considered) for overall comfort, convenience, looks, elegance, practicality….) is NOTHING to frown at

Krautninja, yeah these new hyundais are pretty nice, and if i were in the market and could afford to buy upgrades, i would love to have a genesis coupe @2.0T track, but stock only, probably not…. its not that impressive apart from the fact it is rwd and comes with a baby turbo, this sonata coupe…. looks nice, probably rides nice, and needs to in order to remain competetive, on the flipside, for your 15,000 to 20,000 would you want a car to mere LOOK nice, or do you want a car that IS nice?, id go for a Civic Si, Golf, or Golf TDI (even if i had to wait a year for a slighty used low mileage example)

TornadoGT Have you ever driven a Cobalt SS? Or have you ever driven an American car in the last 10 years? The Cobalt is not a piece of S@!t. In fact it wins every comparison test it is in.
The Cobalt SS and GTi are equally priced cars.
And about performance how can you say the Cobalt SS is about drag racing? It smoked an Evo X around a track along with a S200CR. Plus it smokes the Mazdaspeed3. You even said this $32K GTI-R is slower than a Evo.
You then say it has a bad interior. Again it isn’t bad. The GTI-R has a better interior but not $10 grand better.

Need more oil for Imports I have owned American and Jap cars for the last 10 years and the American cars have been as reliable. I always see crashes where imports get totaled and the American car is fine. And the Cobalt SS gets better MPG than the GTI so it will be much better than the GTI-R.
