Officially, Ed Whitacre is General Motors’ interim CEO, but the major announcements coming from his office certainly mark his actions as those of someone in the position on a permanent basis – and that’s exactly what could happen, if reports about today’s 11:30 a.m. EST press conference are to be believed.
GM says that the press conference this morning will be to provide “updates on business activities,” which could contain news about a possible sale of GM’s Saab unit to Spyker and will likely include a more detailed timetable one when GM plans to pay back its government loans. If history is anything to go by, the Chevrolet Volt will be mentioned multiple times.
Yet CNBC reported this morning that Whitacre will take over as the company’s permanent CEO later today. Whitacre was initially brought on by the Obama adminstration as GM’s Chairman of the Board, but he assumed the CEO position after the board voted to remove Fritz Henderson from the position.
