Earlier this month, German and Dutch media reports indicated Volkswagen would roll out its powerful R36 Passat in spring 2007 with a 300 horsepower engine and DSG gearbox. The U.K.’s AutoExpress now says Volkswagen has “confirmed” the report, indicating the R36 will be used to do battle with the turbocharged Mazda 6 MPS. The report indicates the R36 will use the same 280bhp 3.6-litre V6 engine already available in the U.S. However, we strongly suspect initial reports of an uprated 300 horsepower version of the engine are more accurate. It’s also possible different versions may be offered for various markets. Some reports have suggested the R36 will take styling cues from the Passat R GT Concept.
