BMW Mille Miglia Concept

05/11/2006, 8:50 AM

By admin

BMW has unveiled a new concept car prior to the 2006 Mille Miglia. The car has hints of today’s BMW Z4 Coupe mixed with one of BMW’s most famous racing cars, the BMW 328. The bodywork is based on the legendary two-seater that Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and Walter Bäumer drove home the victory during the Mille Miglia in 1940. Under the skin, it’s powered by modified drivetrain and suspension from the new Z4 M Coupe.

CoOl, the back end looks asif its some piece of clothing… one side overlapping the other, also the nice curves.
They will never make it, and nobody would buy it… but as a concept care, I think it is very sweet.

Hideous. Absolutely hideous. It’s not a flowing design, it’s out of proportion and it doesn’t do justice to both the Z4 Coupe nor the 328. The only thing that looks potentially exciting is that interior. And that double-kidney grille, old-school style, is a nice touch.

Other than that though, this looks bad. Real bad.

Overall, I like it. I can see those headlight design being used in some production BMW coupe sometime in the future. May be the next 6-series.

WHY??? WHY I SAID! GOD, THE ORIGINAL CAR WASN’T THAT PRETTY, AND THE Z4 IS HIDEOUS, WITH THAT STUPID CREASE BEHIND THE FRONT WHEEL AND ALL. IT’S LIKE A HOMELY GIRL AND A REALLY UGLY GUY HAVING A BABY, THE RESULTS CAN’T BE GOOD. BMW IS STARTING TO GET A LITTLE WACKY IN THE SENSE THAT THE VERY RICH SOMETIMES BECOME ECCENTRICS, JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN. I HOPE BMW IS SAVING ALL THE MONEY THEY CURRENTLY MAKE, BECAUSE IF THEY KEEP STYLING VEHICLES LIKE THIS, THEY’LL NEED IT.

Beautiful, amazing detailing… Just incredible. I always wondered what a modern interpretation of the old style double kidney grille would look like. I guess I have my answer now…

However, the whole just isn’t very pretty. BMW seems absolutely fascinated by the asymmetric design idea, and you know they must be itching to sneak it into a production model.

BMW’s modern design reminds me of modern architecture: Often endlessly interesting, especially for the insider, but often hardly beautiful to the lay person…

and

Yet go back and look at the ‘X-Coupe’…it’s the Z4.

I’d bet we’ll see this again in the future…unfortunately

Bangle is pushing the envelope, which is fine buy me. It takes guts to venture into to new ground. I may not like all of his work, but I respect his taking a chance. When his work first arrived my reaction was WHAT?!? The more you look at it, it grows on you and you begin to appreciate the characterisics of his work. Not all of it successful, but its what BMW needed to stand out in a world of automotive clones. The 6 series coupe I feel is the most integrated and successful of the line to date, though the alloys are too effeminate for my taste.

I’m dissapointed because of the change from strong muscular rigid straight lines of earlier model BMW cars. What happened to the people who crafted the last of the boxy 3 series? They say Chris is not shy to defend his designs, and the boards of directors is also said to support Bangle, but whoever those people are; they are alienating BMW purists(stolid minimalist pefectionists who scrub the chassis with a toothbrush). To me it the death of what was and used to be. I’m still not buying Japanese autos at this time, though, because to me, Japanese cars are too much of a a quote transportation/conveyance product unquote. We weren’t paying for the BMW logo. We were paying for an engineer’s car, “the most engineered car” somebody once told me. That’s what happened…it is not really an “engineer’s car” anymore. Right? Why were the nice heater/defrost/ac knobs discontinued? Some things are good the way they are. It almost gives me a headache. I’m not even an engineer.

I think Chris would be a gift to any hospital for sick children or maybe a pre-school/kindergarten setting. He could be an illustrator/storyteller and send kid’s imaginations to delightful(just not to me) destinations like Puff The Magic’s incredible castle and show his strange and wonderful automobile that runs on pure liquid ice cream or whatever, etc., etc. ,etc.

It’s going to be fine…I know it. I can’t believe this has happened! When the orderlies from Happy Acres came to take Chris away, it suddenly became clear that it had to be true. But now what do we do? How do we face the world and say, “Oops”? We thought he was real!

When they told me he’d previously posed as a product manager at Coca Cola in the United States (he championed “New Coke”), and also as the Italian Prime Minister (we all know what happened there), I was devastated.

Good thing we didn’t give him complete control over all our product design: that would have been corporate suicide. Oh, wait…

Would someone please inform Chris Bangle that you CAN design a car outside of Alias modelling software. This ass-clown is good at gettting publicity, but his designs, while “extraordinary”, are usually extraordinary works of someone who spends too much time 3-D modelling rather than sketching…

What’s up with the random assymetric colored line and the random wooden element in the strakes on the sides? What about the misproportioned back end?

Cohesive, coherent design this ain’t.

I think its pretty cool. Kind of looks like a plane in a lot of ways (which makes sense, considering bmw is “born from propellor planes”). The side exhausts are cool. I love the ****pit, and the entire top of the car is perfect. The sides are definately interesting, definately very cool. At first I thought “that **** is whack” but now I’m seeing the beauty in it.

Just because its unlike anything you’ve ever seen before doesn’t mean its bad. I would venture to say most of you detractors simply dont understand it, especially considering all the questions you ask. I like the design. I think its VERY unique, VERY interesting, and VERY original. I know it seems weird and different, but thats what is so cool about it. Its not like Chris Bangle just threw together a bunch of shapes, so quit acting like hes just making crap. He’s not. And who are you all to say that he is? He knows more about automotive design than all of you put together.

You say “I know what I like.” I say you like what you know. You are all so quick to say “AW ITS SO UGLY” after only a few looks. Stare at it a while. Examine every line, every curve. You’ll find the flow. Its there, and its beautiful.

BAMF… a good car design shouldn’t have to be “stared at for a while” in order it to be beautiful. A good design should win you over in an instant. It should make you take a double-take as it cruises by. This design is just plain ugly. Like all of Bangles designs, it looks fat and heavy and has far too many pointless creases and lines.

When will automotive designers end their obsession with RETRO already!

No. Thats art baby, get used to it. The guy isn’t making the same straight hard lined BMWs that they made forever. I’m glad. It was a nice look, but its time for something a little more interesting. Something creative. Thats the idea: creativity. Got it?

Hmmm… I’m not sure what to think of this car. The front, especially those slit headlights above the round ones, looks atrocious. However, as bad as the car starts, it finishes well. The way the roof slopes into the bumper and the coverings over the rear wheels make it look snazzy as hell. Its got some lines on it, good and bad. Hmm… its a concept car for sure.

This is haute cuisine and if you’re used to burgers and Coke you’re probably going to hate it. But seriously…I like it! Really! I don’t like the headlights and I’m never going to buy one, but I like it…And I like the fact that it’s not just another computer-generated consumer product. This is hands-on sculpting, modelling. It’s…strange (?), it’s sort of ugly, artsy and very retro but different and -I dare say- necessary.

05/15, 3:15 PM

Retro, which is what this mess is, is inherently not creative. Taking an old design and re-drawing it with modern lines is a REHASH. Where’s the creativity in that?? Is it in the low profile tires or the projection beam headlights.? Please! Art, of any kind is subjective and it’s beauty is in the eyes of the beholder as they say. So go ahead and love it, that’s your prerogative, but don’t argue for a second that it’s creative.

I agree that Bangle designs are out there, but this car is a faithful interpretation of the original. For those of you that do not like this, research the bmw kamm coupe that was entered into the mille miglia. It’s uglier than sin, but proved quite faster than the winning touring body coupe. Only machanical complications kept it from winning. I say hats off to Bangle
