I’ve driven in France before, and it didn’t strike me as that different than here in the US, except in general there were fewer dumbasses on the road.

European cars do fine here, just in case you haven’t noticed the ass-load of BMWs, Merecedes, Volvos, etc. here.

The U.S. is a big place, and there are places where the roads are truly awful (like Detroit, MI), and there are places where they’re quite nice, like Tennessee. And if you drove during rush hour in one of the big cities, then yes, they are “stupid busy”. That’s what happens when you have a huge amount of people all going the same place at the same time. ———–

I suspect that I’d find most of them underpowered, ——-please justify why you assume they would be undepowered if you havent driven one how can you say they woudl be underpowered, the last deisel mondeo was very very quick. and had plent of pulling power fully popolated – 5 adults with luggage

but would appreciate their superior gas mileage, given the expensive fuel I’d be burning. i drive around 3000 miles a month how far does tha averidge person drive in the us I wonder

We didn’t have ancient towns with roads that were scaled to horse and buggy traffic, into which we had to fit cars———. and your point is you have a loop hole that allows you to drive cars that have un ecomomical engines that dont stack up. in terms of distributable power to ecomomy of scale.

You need to come over here and take a “road trip” from New York to Los Angeles, I have driven a lot in the US l, re NY to LA id rather fly.

Actually, I have driven the Mazda Wankel engine, in a friend’s RX-8. It was very smooth, and it’s amazing how much power they’ve gotten out of such a tiny engine. But relative to its competition, it’s still not especially powerful, ——— do you unserstand it a 1.3 litre engine what is its competition in engine cap alone ………. I understand they get rotten gas mileage, especially considering their tiny size and modest horsepower rating. And they still burn a lot more oil than piston engines do. That engine is a good example of “thinking outside the box”, but it’s not a very good solution to anyone’s fuel economy needs.———— no neither is massive engine sizes – again mate I refer to my main point – accept the 1.6 ( which yes is silly for a car the size of a mondeo ) and 2 litre diesel, and Ford of EUROPE, might just say hell we have a very large market in the american segment lets take a chance. ( until the US embrace mid engine cars then forget cars like the mondeo vectra etc ).

Clarissa—you say that the Mondeo will be sold in Mexico, as though you know that for a fact. Assuming you’re right, we Amercan’s can’t just drive across the border, buy a car that was built for the Mexican market, and expect to license it here. There are too many safety and emmissions standards that are different for the U.S. market.

Get the word out and let people know that Ford is doing this.

Something to pay particular notice to is how short the rear bumper is. The euro mazda6 5-door is the same way, but they had to give it a longer bumper for us nimrods in the states. I guess to protect is from the soccer moms in the SUVs.

Whatever the case, the 6 is due for a huge makeover next fall, so perhaps this has something to do with it. Ford would be very smart to market a version (this one) as their own, alongside the popular 6.

So you like paying a lot more for your fuel – than we do in the UK – work it out mpg etc – 2 litre mondo or vauxhall vectra 45 – 55 mpg – ( at 70 mph, the 4 litlre piece of Chrysler junk i drove in the states was about 23 mpg @ at constant 50 mph what a joke I think it went to about 18mpg at 70mph ( when I managed to get to that speed on your dare i call them motorways – stupid busy – you should be lobbying the government to build better roads )

. Assuming this Mondeo is a European car that would presumably have a smaller engine, how hard could it be to put a bigger engine in it? ( you need to understand Europe are not interested in the states needs )

Ford are trying to reduce overheads streamline manufacturing process throughout the world imho this wouldnt fit in, as it would lead to parallel streams – differing internals uprated platform brakes etc to cope with a lot more powerful car –
have you ever driven a euro car – i think you would change your mind once you have -in respect of bigger engines etc – think outside the box- go look at the mazda wankle engine 1.3 litre engine that would leave the vast majority of cars standing

Ford has plenty of engines in the 2.3 – 4.0 litre range. Oh—and what does the last sentence in your response mean? Ive read it six times and I still can’t figure it out.

Ford’s whole existance is dedicated to the proposition that it must do whatever possible to drive itself out of business.

I dont think its US being seen as simple, it more of would the US consumer accept a 1.6 petrol engine or a 1.8 or even a 2 litre diesel in a car of this size, every time i have been to the states they laugh when i say we drive 2 litre cars – how do you manage has often been heared ( one stated ” we have hills” – a taxi cab driver in san fran.
I get the feeling Ford dont want the expense of having to produce differing engines for its us market , i.e v8 3 to 4 litre versions as standard.
