Actual the review has been changed since last night, not to fight, but then it stated the 4x4 Patriot had a 2.0 motor, it also stated Chrysler made a change to the interior after 1 year of production and did infact state the Patriot was introduced in 08. I do see the article is different from what it was last night. How about just admitting it was wrong and that is was corrected? That is not a personal attack, just a suggestion. Anyhow, that is all I am stating on this matter......

Stew,

First, I want to remind you that we do moderate the comments section. Please watch your posts - this one is perilously close to a personal attack that can and will get you banned from this site.

Nowhere in the article did we imply that the Patriot was not offered in 2007. Also, we didn't talk about the 2.0 liter engine because, as you said, it's not available on four-wheel-drive models. We also didn't talk about the driving characteristics of the Freedom Drive II system because our tester wasn't equipped with it. We get what Chrysler gives us to evaluate - just like every other publication.

I'd recommend you take a deep breath and re-read the review... it's just the Internet, man, and our review wasn't nearly as critical of the Patriot as you think it was. In fact, we rather liked the little Jeep runabout - especially its new interior.

This is a short sighted review, loaded with mistakes and incorrect assumptions. First off, the Patriot's first year was in 07, not 08. Second, the 172 HP 4 cylinder that comes with all 4x4 Patriot (and is optional on the 2WD) is a 2.4, not a 2.0 (that is only avail with the most basic 2WD model, coupled only with the CVT, replacing that with the 5 speed and 2.4 is actually CHEAPER). Third the description of the FDIIs off-road equipment is rather incomplete and misleading. The low range DOES act like a normal low range, even if it doesn't do it in a traditional manner. Anways, look up some info on it and check out the rather lengthy list of FDII upgrades. Also the FDI DOES have offroad capability. Experienced it many times myself in my FDI/5 speed. Also the 07-08 interior is NOT as horrible as you and others make it out to be. It is easy to clean and with 11000 miles so far on my 07 there are NO squeaks and NO rattles and NOTHING has broke, that is more important to me as I don't get off by petting my dashboard....... And why no mention of the Patriots EXTENSIVE standard safety features? All models come with ESP (that can actually be turned off for off-roading), TCS, ABS with brake assist, front and side airbags. Couple all that with the optional AWD and you have an amazing all-weather runner.

elviososa, I think you are trying to imply you have to crank a jeep 2 or 3 times during the winter to get it started, nice try at trying to undermine quality. We actually have 2 Jeeps (07 Patriot and 01 grand Cherokee Limiter with the upcountry package) and trust me, NEVER an issue cranking over on the coldest days, and that includes the 96 Cherokee we just sold with 200,000 miles on it. Anywho, all I can say is buy a Patriot. I was rather skecptical of it's off-road abilities myself, but as of now have had it through a LOT off the road and other patriot owners have taken it many steps further than I have. This little ute has a way of working it's way into your heart, warts and all.

raineman- You must have been driving a lemon. Not even an $800 go-cart that I used to have had 3 seconds of lag. Sure, it didn't activate as quickly as a transmission, but most of the problems with current CVT's is they just aren't efficient enough. They spend too much time with computer programs and ratios.

And who says its just Americans who prefer manuals? Once again, just another half azs comment. It's more convenient, nothing wrong with that.

Have you ever driven a vehicle with CVT?

Step on the gas... count to 3 while the transmission decides what ratio is best, then accellerate. It's like horrible turbo lag.

All the mileage benefits of the CVT could easily be realised through the use of a 6-speed manual... with extra performance to boot. Lazy Americans just need to learn how to drive a manual transmission.

Yeah, I was hoping someone would do some back to back pictures. I was looking for a few this morning, just to compare the two.

And I would actually be convinced to say... I would rather have a CVT going off-road. Sure, you can laugh at me all you want, but more to fix in a transmission, more to go wrong and IF they do, you can't just replace one or two parts for a quick fix. Also, more control over a regular transmission.

LLN you should really put up pictures from a 2008 Patriot and a comparable 2009 Patriot interior.

I actually checked one out this evening based on the review... picked up the wife's '03 Grand Cherokee WJ off at the dealer (yet again) and wandered into the showroom. WOW. For the $23,000 msrp (minus, what, $8000 in rebates lol), it was a HECK of an interior. Really blew me away.

Still can't really warm up to the idea of an ifs/irs jeep.........

Ditto JakeK. I took one out for a test drive this past spring looking for a replacement to my '98 Tracker and while I never thought it possible that in this day and age there could still be an interior as utilitarian as the Tracker's I was sadly mistaken. Too bad it was such a deal breaker because with the 5spd manual it actually drove very well.

I hope this is accurate because I almost cried when I was in the last Patriot it was so bad on the inside. The seats had less cushion than a solid wood chair, and the hardest plastic ever invented for every piece of the interior. I never wanted to step foot in a Chrysler product again. I will goto the dealership soon to see if the interior is any better, I hope they are right.
