you can charge and and use the itip at the same time by using a usb car adaptor and a usb cable plugged directly into the itrip.
bingo.
(dirty sound quality though.)

UPDATE:

I just got an email from Mychal at Griffin and the volume issue can be fixed by holding down the Menu and Select (Center) button on the Video iPods. This resets the sound level some how and now I get huge volume. Wh ythey don’t post this on the site I don’t know…

Good industrial design for an absolutely awful product. The iTrip is a total waste of money and that’s the problem. Griffin keeps prices low on iTrips ($28 to $49) so customers don’t get too pissed when they find out how bad these things are. If the sound quality makes you want to throw your iPod out the window, send or take them back demanding a refund.

I agree 100%. I had the original iTrip and it worked well. I purchased this one thinking that it would be great like all other Griffin products I have had. Boy was I wrong. So I sent an E-mail to them thinking that they must have a “version 2.0″ on the way and maybe I could get one of them instead. What I received was this message blaming the whole thing on Apple.

Yeah the iTrip was nothing but awful. I took the antenna off of my car and it still didnt do anything, then my dad got the Monster one and he lets me use it, you can only use a few channels but it broadcasts great.

I have to agree with the article about this version of the iTrip. It is a P.O.S. and the volume thing just completely SUCKS. I had the original iTrip on my 2G iPod and it worked well. The iTrip for my mini works great but this thing is a total waste of money. You have to crank the volume of your car stereo to the MAX. Where I travel all the time and constantly use rental cars I don’t have the option of a line-in I am stuck when it comes to my 60GB Video iPod

I had the same problem going from the old style top mounted iTrip to an iTrip Auto. The sound was too low and static filled; Maybe 50% quality compared to my old iTrip.

I found that by turning off the “Sound Check” option in my iPod (both Nano and 3g) it made a big difference. I still can’t get it as loud as the original iTrip, but it is closer to 80-90% now and provides noticeably cleaner sound.

I have an iTrip in my Focus and I like it quite a bit. I know other that did not have a good experience with it, but in my car it is great.

If you own an iPod and a car that doesn’t have a direct line-in to its stereo, you’re undoubtedly familiar with FM transmitters. Put simply, an FM transmitter sucks.

I have a 4G ipod and the newer old iTrip (the one with the screen and the spin wheel for the station and it sat on top in the right position) and it works wonderfully in my area and in my car. It sounds fine in most of my friends cars, but every once in a while i find a car it doesnt want to cooperate in. I also find the quality sucks in most urban areas. Just what I’ve noticed as the owner of one. Test a friends (if possible) before you buy one.

The iTrip, for lack of a better word, Sucks. I had one. Hated it, terrible sound quality, hurt battery life and sometimes decided to not work. I was always stuck on “87.9″ FM because I couldn’t for the life of me get it to switch. Tape adapters stink too, but they kick this thing’s butt. Get a direct connector for your car’s stereo, or just burn CD’s or MP3 CD’s. Bottom Line: Wait until Apple builds this type of device into the iPod, and DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS CRAP!
