SEMA 2009: Rhys Millen mid-engine Hyundai Genesis RM460 Coupe [Live photos]

11/03/2009, 6:20 PM

By Drew Johnson

Rhys Millen Racing and Hyundai officially unveiled the long-awaited mid-engined Hyundai Genesis RM460 coupe earlier today at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Powered by a thoroughly massaged version of the V8 engine used in the Genesis sedan – mounted midship, of course – the show car promises handling more on par with the Porsche Cayman. The engine receives eight individual throttle bodies and a set of JE pistons, which bump the compression ratio up to about 11.0:1, although none of the internals have been modified. Hyundai says the show car will crank out 500 horsepower.

The V8 mounts to a five-speed race-ready Mendeola sequential transmission tuned for a maximum speed of 182 mph, according to Inside Line.

Despite the engine placement, RMR is keeping the suspension mostly stock since the driveshaft doesn’t interfere with the rear suspension.

To facilitate access to the engine, the Genesis Coupe has been converted into a hatchback.

RMR says the modified coupe was inspired by the Ferrari 599XX, so no over-the-top SEMA spec body kit here. Just some subtle tweaks capped off by a set of 20-inch rims.

It’s interesting, but will we ever be seeing one? Nope…

What a crazy idea. This is a conversion that has been deemed impossible since unibody construction became the norm.

If you’ve got the time, money, and imagination nothing is impossible.

What a waste of money.

They should just put on a show somethig that buyers will do… like make a turbo kit, a full coil over kit, and a subtle body kit. Maybe some brakes, intake, exhaust, headers, etc.. have a package.. whatever.

Something that will cost less than a Nissan 370Z, but out perform it. That should be the goal. Not this science project.

I agree with LS7, but it’s still a cool work of art though!

It’s cool I’ll give them that.

I’m not super crazy about the Genesis Coupe, but the fact it’s one of the only affordable 2+2 seater RWD coupes out there that isn’t a Mustang, Camaro, or Challenger I’m glad at least something is out.

I do admit while the Genesis Coupe in stock form doesn’t really appeal to me with some of these body kits I think it actually looks really appealing.

What’s a SMEA Show?

SEMA = Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association. It’s an annual show in Vegas that is closed to the public for all the aftermarket companies to show their wares and generally out-bling each other. Part legitamate trade show, part pen1s waving contest, generally considered cool by all.

Ahh, you were commenting on the misspelling in the article. Nevermind. Oh well, let the definition stand for anyone who doesn’t really know what SEMA is.

Hyundai needs to offer that front end as an option to the pinched in puckered up look the gen coupe has now

Good catch Smegley… I agree.

I was in the lane next to a stock Genesis coupe last week for about 3 or 4 kms and the way traffic was moving I had a good long look at the profile, the back and the nose. The front end really is the weak point in its design. I mean this is supposed to be the sporty coupe to compliment the Genesis sedan and two thirds of the car does just that… unfortunately the last bit still screams Tiburon. C’mon Hyundai… this is not a difficult thing to fix.

Exactly, Johnny. This design is an eyecatcher until you get the the cheap looking assymetrical nostril up front. It’s actually more like like mounting mounting Marty Feldman’s head on Angelina Joile’s body. I know some people will call us superficial for that, but I defy any of them to sport wood for Marty Feldman’s head. Which reminds me of one of my favorite parody songs to “Betty Davis Eyes” ….

.

Her hair is gray and old
Her lips chapped and dry
Her hands are always cold
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes
Her once good looks are gone
She’ll no longer entice
A big mole on her nose
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes

She’ll unease you
She has fleas too
And she has Hodgkin’s disease too
She’s atrocious
Sometimes she forgets to make the toilet bowl flush
She’s got Kirstie Alley big fat thighs
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes

She’s from a mental home
You know her mind’s not right
Her hair she doesn’t comb
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes
She’ll scream or mumble at you
Repeats everything twice
She’s got a few loose screws
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes

She’s an old shrew
And she’s been to
Other planets in a U.F.O. too
She’s atrocious
And she knows just what it takes to make you go nuts
All the boys think she’s a guy
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes

She’ll impede you
And deceive you
All the better just to leave you
She’s atrocious
When she scrubs her back she’ll use the toilet bowl brush
All the boys think she’s a guy
She’s got Marty Feldman eyes

If these pictures are up to date, (like they were taken yesterday) they have a lot of work to do in less than 2 weeks.

hyundai should consider a MR car. It would REALLY get the auto industry stirring. Skip out on a miata-like roadster that’s been rumored on hyundai sites (slated to come out the same time as the Veloster, BTW, sharing the same platform & 1,6L turbo) and give us a MR car.

@chevymanc6:
It’s not from “out there” (by which I guess you mean Korea) it’s a one-off done modification by RMR which is based out Huntington Beach, California. Hyundai has done nothing but sanction it and co-operate on a corporate level.
