Rinspeed sQuba concept [image update]

Rinspeed has released a second round of images of its sQuba concept ahead of the car’s 2008 Geneva Motor Show debut in March. Known for over-the-top concepts, the latest Rinspeed concept is no exception. The Swiss company hails the sQuba as the “world’s first real diving car” as it is capable of diving to depths of 33 feet.

Like the Tesla Roadster, the all-electric sQuba is based on the Lotus Elise.

On land, the sQuba is powered by an electric motor that sends its power to the rear wheels. Once in the water, propulsion is provided by two propellers and a pair of jet drives.

A self-contained on-board air system provides the driver and passenger with oxygen when the sQuba is submerged.

Like the majority of Rinspeed’s creations, there are no plans to put the sQuba into production.

Phun with Photoshop. Really, other than the bell thingie on the side and the fins, this is just a rendered Lotus Elise superimposed on an aquatic background. Isn’t it 5 months unit 1 April???

Thank you Captain Obvious. As we all know(or should) Rinspeed pretty much just customizes existing production models. They usually work on Porsche’s. At least that’s what I’ve seen.

I’d really like to see some video footage of this testing. I just don’t get why Rinspeed makes all these concepts, I mean concepts are cool, but what do they actually makes that gets produced and how do they profit?

On a side note, the Aquadra Car did come into production and I think that’s really cool. Even though there was the Amphi Car from what the 60’s? Haha that’s a sweet car. I saw two men wearing cow-boy hats drive one right down a boat launch outside a town near Traverse City Michigan and drive it straight down a channel and then drive up a boat Launch in front of a bunch of Charter Fisherman. They even had a pole sticking out the back. Hahaha… should have seen everyones’ faces!
