Rolls-Royce CEO sheds more light on smaller sedan

04/23/2007, 12:02 PM

By admin

Rolls-Royce CEO Ian Robertson has disclosed more details on the brand’s forthcoming sedan slotted below the extravagant Phantom. “The design is finished and the first prototypes should be running very shortly,” Robertson told Reuters at the Shanghai Auto Show.

Robertson also gave the first specific price estimate for the new Rolls. He said it would cost just two thirds the price of a Phantom. That puts its MSRP around $215,000. The price is roughly $100,000 more than the 760Li sedan from parent company BMW. The price tag will position the new car squarely against the Bentley Arnage.

Robertson reckons the new model will “more than double our overall sales.” The automaker has already sold out of its Phantom Drophead Coupe through the end of 2008.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March, Robertson made it clear the vehicle would be “unmistakably a Rolls-Royce,” and would be a niche offering of roughly 800 vehicles annually.

Robertson first disclosed plans for the new sedan at a private function at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006.

The next rapper’s delight?
Will cost “just” two thirds the price of a Phantom? Is that expensive enough to make it cool with the blingers?
Can’t wait to see the new car’s standard 22in chrome dubs….hahahaha!!

I can’t wait to see it. I love Bentley and Rolls-Royce and I love that they make these types of cars. I think they should make another Convertible and a sports GT to attack the the Bentley’s

Since there will be a smaller Maybach, RR needs something similar. Why not. And don’t worry: It will be expensive.

I’d go for the 760Li.

House or car, huh? Knowing Rolls, the car will be bigger than any house you can buy for the price here in LA!

I don’t get it, doesn’t the Phantom compete with the Arnage? I know the Phantom costs a bit more, but those appear very similar in function, purpose, etc, except the Arnage is more sport oriented. I would have thought Rolls might target the Continental Flying Spur…but regardless of what it’s targeting, it’s going to be better than that target, because Rolls Royce is the very finest manufacturer of the worlds BEST ultra-luxury cars. Bentley and Maybach just can’t compete with Rolls.

huh? no inane ranting from gm_sales about how superior the common buick is to any rolls royce, and that this page should not report anything about cars that arent gm?

GMs underground marketing dept. must be asleep… or been laid off, like tens of thousands others at GM, due to boosting sales…

Wow, what an ugly piece of ****. So how many of those 800 are going to be either showboated in rap videos or blown up in horrible “racing” movies?

No thanks, I’ll stick with BMWs and Cadillacs for my luxury fix.

homeboy234: Yeah the fine lines of the ultra lux classes are actually more complex than you’d think. The Arnage is old school ultra luxury sport style, while the Maybach and Rolls are new age modern luxury, while the Continental Flying Spur is more in the vein of the Arnage but cheaper and more modern, it’s all more confusing than one would think. I still put the Arnage in the class of the Maybach 57 and the Rolls Royce Phantom just to simplify all of the clutter, and stick the Continental Flying Spur kind of on its own, or if I’m stretching it, with the Quattroporte

PrimeGTP: What “ugly piece of ****” are you referring to? The Phantom? This article isn’t about the Phantom. There is no picture corresponding with this article so I’m not sure what the hell you’re actually talking about. If you’re talking about the Phantom, I’m not sure why as it’s not the focus.

There’s no sense in a smaller sedan. Those guys should be making a luxury SUV.
