Diesel engines are popular options in Europe, as they are not only more efficient and thereby less expensive to run on the region's costly fuel, but they also get tax breaks. Nearly every automaker offers a diesel option on their offerings, from subcompacts to luxury vehicles and of course trucks and SUVs.

But one well-established ultra-luxury automaker, Rolls-Royce, isn't likely to offer a diesel engine option any time soon, AutoCar learned from an unnamed source. The carmaker polled its customers for feedback regarding a diesel powerplant and received negative responses.

One source said customers will perceive such an engine as a compromise and wouldn't entertain the idea.

"They said absolutely not, don't bring diesel anywhere near a Rolls-Royce, we won't buy it," he said.

At the same time, the source, who is employed by Rolls-Royce, revealed there is also no interest by the company to follow in the footsteps of Aston Martin and Bentley in building an SUV bearing the Rolls-Royce brand.

"We don't chase volume, so we're not looking for a volume creator," the source added.
