Ford tuner Roush has put together three new kits for Mustang GT500, offering as much as 700 horsepower for owners of the popular muscle car. The simplest upgrade is the addition of a Cold Air Kit with new calibration which nets 45 horsepower.
The next step is including the 2.3L blower in a package which adds 120 horsepower and 88 lb.-ft. torque while keeping a 3-year/36,000 mile warranty. This warranty will not void any offered by the factory. This kit includes the ROUSHcharger, a 78mm non-removable pulley and new calibration.
For those living on the wild side, a non-warranty version will also be offered, and this version is anticipated to push the GT500 engine to 700 horsepower — 200 more than the stock engine. Customers will have to purchase a 72mm or 76mm pulley separately, and this version does not include an upgraded calibration. Pricing has not yet been announced.

very educated comment the mullet master. I would be more impressed witha tuner that does an intake exhaust and suspention upgrades but replaces body panels with C/F or Fiberglass and cuts the thing down a few hundred pounds

even with the extra horsepower it still weighs more than an aircraft carrier… its a flying tank and doesn’t even have independant rear suspension.. its a 1960’s car all over again.. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the 60’s muscle cars but we DO have better suspensions now which make them handle better and safer as well.. jeeezzzz Ford how about a Little new technology mixed in as well HuH ? Don’t be so cheap… even the new Camaro will have IRS for cripe sakes…

i think i read fords solid axle was quite a big improvement over previous solid axles. in terms of handling. and it saved the stang a couple grand off the price too. who knows in 2008 we might see an irs mustang, because they did do a bunch of research into both areas.

The most popular style of racing is drag racing. Ford knows this. Solid axle setups are far superior to IRS when it comes to drag racing. They are stronger, easier to dial in & most importantly, more predictable. Ford then went ahead and refined it even more so that it would be able to handle the twists and turns well too.
I’ve read on the net that people with the 03-04 Cobras were breaking half-shafts on their IRS when they started pumping up their engines to the horsepower levels of the GT500.
Ford wasn’t going to put a similar setup in their flagship performace car (now that the GT is retired) knowing the weak link would be the IRS. Even if they revised the IRS suspension to handle the power, well now there goes the sticker price.

Yeah, that’s So Necessary in the real world for those burnouts out of the High School parking lot and for going to work at the mall…
…as important as an extra 200HP on a car that already has 500HP. Of course, we’re not concerned about turning corners or stopping, are we?

Nope, 1c3d0g – 700HP and solid rear axle in ANY “Modern” road car is just a goofy idea, IMHO.  I’m also not impressed w/ 600+ hp AMG’s or BMW M-Series either, and certainly don’t see any practical need for a 1000bhp Bugatti.
I’d rather get the full benefit of a Lotus Elise, Mini Cooper S or GTI by thrashing the heck out of it and wringing 100% of it’s performance potential than roaring from red-light to intersection in an overwrought German or Japanese beast. Driving fun is alot more than just flexing your right ankle, IMO.Â

Ford already have a decent IRS setup in their Australian cars – it’s called Control Blade. I’m sure if they really wanted to they could put it into their US cars. From what I’ve seen the Control Blade is a good suspension setup.

I believe the idea of such a car is not practicality. I seriously doubt anyone is going to have this car as a daily driver, but rather that weekend car.
I am also pretty sure I read a bit by Carol Shelby on the criticism of the solid rear axle. I do not remember his comments verbatim, but I believe he said that their experience was that the system was the best for the application.

While this car (and probably the “base” model GT500 for all intents and purposes) may not be the most refined machine on the road, I have no doubt in my mind that it would be an absolute blast to drive.
There are many different kinds of fun.

i love pure, raw, unrefined power, but i also like a sophisticated feel, but not necessarily at the same time. it all depends on the application. raw power is great for a straight line, maybe a light turn here and there to avoid road blindness, but not those fun little back roads around here, i love my S2000. sometimes i guess its nice to have 700bhp, just so you know you have it.
