Rumor mill: Citroen GT concept headed for production

12/16/2008, 4:09 PM

By Drew Johnson

Citroen recently paired with the hit Playstation franchise Gran Turismo to create the ‘GTbyCitroen’, but a new report indicates the low-slung super car might not be left solely to the digital world. The GT first appeared at the 2008 Paris Motor Show, but could soon wind up in the driveways of a lucky few.

According to several French media outlets, Citroen is planning an extremely limited run of the GT. Citroen’s new design director, Jean-Pierre Ploué, has also hinted that the show car would serve as the basis for a limited-edition production model.

If the GT does ultimately get the green light, Citroen is expected to only produce a total of 20 units.

No word yet on what powertrain will power the road-going GT. In the video game Gran Turismo the GT uses a hydrogen fuel cell to power an electric motor, but that is clearly not a viable option at this point. However, a hybrid powertrain – possible even a diesel unit – isn’t completely off the table.

Ehh when you’re only making 20 cars you don’t need to worry about them selling. They’ll probably all be sold before production is done.

if the car is done right, they could be sold out before production is even started, just look at the production of the bugatti pur sang, it sold out so quickly buy european clients they had to make the sang noir edition so the north american market could get their fill of special edition cars
